European journal of cardio-thoracic surgery : official journal of the European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery, Volume 7, Issue 7, 1 1 1993, Pages 356-359 Surgery for membranous subaortic stenosis. Long-term follow-up. Hazekamp MG, Frank M, Hardjowijono R, Quaegebeur JM, Ottenkamp J, Huysmans HA
From 1958 to 1992, 105 patients were operated for discrete (or membranous) subaortic stenosis (DSAS). Our surgical techniques changed during this period. Before 1980 DSAS was removed by a sharp excision leaving the part on the mitral valve untouched (n = 58). After 1980 blunt dissection was used to enucleate DSAS completely (n = 47). The operation for DSAS was combined with aortic valve replacement (AVR) in 7 instances. Follow-up with recent echo-Doppler studies was complete in 100 patients. Rec... Abstract

Biology of the neonate, Volume 64, Issue 4, 1 1 1993, Pages 193-200 Cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation in preterm infants after low-vs. high-dose surfactant replacement therapy. Dorrepaal CA, Benders MJ, Steendijk P, van de Bor M, van Bel F
In thirteen preterm infants receiving surfactant (Curosurf) replacement therapy, changes in cerebral hemodynamics and oxygenation were investigated by near infrared spectroscopy. Surfactant instillation led to an instantaneous increase in cerebral blood volume (CBV) in all infants, which was primarily due to an increase in deoxygenated hemoglobin. Five infants received a low dose (100 mg/kg = 1.25 ml/kg) of surfactant and 8 a high dose (200 mg/kg = 2.50 ml/kg). A significantly larger increase in... Abstract

European journal of cardio-thoracic surgery : official journal of the European Association for Cardio-thoracic Surgery, Volume 7, Issue 10, 1 1 1993, Pages 514-519 The value of the stentless biovalve prosthesis. An experimental study. Hazekamp MG, Goffin YA, Huysmans HA
Clinical use of the stentless bioprosthesis has not yet been accepted world-wide. Experimental studies are scarce. In a study in growing pigs, 23 aortic valve replacements were performed (7 stented bioprostheses (STB), 10 stentless bioprostheses (SLB) and 6 cryopreserved homografts (CAH)). Valves were studied macroscopically and microscopically after explantation. Five animals died between 1.5 and 4 months after implantation. Two STBs showed extreme calcific degeneration. A third STB animal died... Abstract

Agents and actions. Supplements, Volume 42, 1 1 1993, Pages 111-121 Oxidation resistant muteins of antileukoproteinase as potential therapeutic agents. Steffens GJ, Heinzel-Wieland R, Saunders D, Wolf B, Rudolphus A, Stolk J, Krarnps JA, Dijkman JA
Native antileukoproteinase (ALP) and two oxidant resistant mutants ALP 242 and ALP 231 were synthesized by means of recombinant DNA technology. In the ALP 242 molecule the methionine residue located in the reactive centre of the binding loop is replaced by a leucine residue. In ALP 231 all four methionine residues of the second domain were substituted by leucine residues. The native inhibitor and the two oxidant resistant molecules show comparable inhibitory capacities towards human neutrophil e... Abstract

The Anatomical record, Volume 235, Issue 1, 1 1 1993, Pages 74-86 Histological organization of the right and left atrioventricular valves of the chicken heart and their relationship to the atrioventricular Purkinje ring and the middle bundle branch. Lu Y, James TN, Bootsma M, Terasaki F
In the avian heart the right and left atrioventricular (AV) valves not only exhibit their own special anatomical characteristics, but they also are in close proximity to the conduction system. The right AV valve is a single, spiral plane of myocardium, in remarkable contrast to the fibrous structure characteristic of the mammalian tricuspid valve. A ring of Purkinje tissue encircles the avian right AV orifice and connects to the muscular valve. The chicken has no crista supraventricularis, its r... Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging, Volume 11, Issue 2, 1 1 1993, Pages 207-218 Sequential analysis of infarcted and normal myocardium in piglets using in vivo gadolinium-enhanced MR images. van Dijkman PR, Höld KM, van der Laarse A, Holman ER, Ozdemir HI, van der Nat TH, de Roos A, van der Wall EE
Gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging was performed before, and 1 and 3 wk after coronary occlusion in domestic piglets. After administration of the contrast agent gadopentetate dimeglumine, two different enhancement patterns within the infarcted region were observed. The first pattern, showing peripheral enhancement of the infarcted region with absence of contrast in the center, was seen at 1 wk after occlusion at 5 min after administration of the contrast agent. The second patter... Abstract
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 137, Issue 2, 1 1 1993, Pages 75-80 [The value of cytological studies in nodular goiter: results in 495 patients]. Goslings BM, Smak Gregoor PJ, Samrén EB, Hamming JF, van Steenis GJ, Hermans J
The accuracy of clinical diagnosis and fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) was evaluated in a total of 495 patients of whom 183 were operated upon within 6 months after FNAB and 312 were not. Operated patients were divided into three subgroups with high, moderate or low suspicion of malignant neoplasms on clinical grounds. Histological examination revealed an overall malignant neoplasm rate of 23%. The rate, i.e. the positive predictive value, was 74% for the subgroup with high clinical suspici... Abstract

Invasion & metastasis, Volume 13, Issue 6, 1 1 1993, Pages 277-288 Increased urokinase receptor levels in human gastrointestinal neoplasia and related liver metastases. Sier CF, Quax PH, Vloedgraven HJ, Verheijen JH, Griffioen G, Ganesh S, Lamers CB, Verspaget HW
Human carcinomas of the oesophagus, stomach, colorectum, and their liver metastases were previously shown to have increased levels of the urokinase-type plasminogen activator (u-PA). The proteolytic activity of u-PA on the surface of tumour cells is thought to play a key role in invasion and metastasis of malignancies. Therefore, in this study we quantitatively determined the presence of specific u-PA receptors in human gastrointestinal carcinomas, premalignant colonic adenomas, liver metastases... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 14, Issue 1, 1 1 1993, Pages 53-56 Dipyridamole thallium-201 scintigraphy for improved detection of left anterior descending coronary artery stenosis in patients with left bundle branch block. Jukema JW, van der Wall EE, van der Vis-Melsen MJ, Kruyswijk HH, Bruschke AV
In patients with left bundle branch block (LBBB) undergoing thallium-201 exercise scintigraphy septal perfusion defects are frequently observed irrespective of the presence or absence of coronary artery disease. Consequently, in these patients the specificity for detecting stenoses in the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) by thallium-201 scintigraphy is relatively low. It has been hypothesized that pharmacological vasodilation would result in higher specificity than conventional exe... Abstract

Arteriosclerosis and thrombosis : a journal of vascular biology, Volume 13, Issue 1, 1 1 1993, Pages 78-83 Potential of 99mTc-LDLs labeled by two different methods for scintigraphic detection of experimental atherosclerosis in rabbits. Atsma DE, Feitsma RI, Camps J, van't Hooft FM, van der Wall EE, Nieuwenhuizen W, Pauwels EK
In this study we evaluated two different 99mTc-labeling techniques to produce 99mTc-low density lipoprotein (99mTc-LDL) suitable for the scintigraphic delineation of experimental atherosclerotic lesions. The two methods are 1) a procedure that uses stannous chloride and sodium borohydride (borohydride method) and 2) a procedure that uses sodium dithionite as a reducing agent and that has been successfully applied in previous scintigraphic atherosclerosis detection (dithionite method). 99mTc-LDL... Journal of virology, Volume 66, Issue 11, 1 1 1992, Pages 6294-6303 Structural proteins of equine arteritis virus. de Vries AA, Chirnside ED, Horzinek MC, Rottier PJ
We have recently shown that the genome of equine arteritis virus (EAV) contains seven open reading frames (ORFs). We now present data on the structural proteins of EAV and the assignment of their respective genes. Virions are composed of a 14-kDa nucleocapsid protein (N) and three membrane proteins designated M, GS, and GL. M is an unglycosylated protein of 16 kDa, and GS and GL are N-glycosylated proteins of 25 and 30 to 42 kDa, respectively. The broad size distribution of GL results from heter... Abstract

Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 136, Issue 45, 1 1 1992, Pages 2236-2238 [2 patients with brain metastases who became pregnant during phenytoin administration]. van der Graaf WT, van Loon AJ, Postmus PE, Sleijfer DT
Two young women taking phenytoin because of symptomatic brain metastases are described. Both patients, one with end-stage lung cancer and the other in complete remission after intensive chemotherapeutic treatment of a choriocarcinoma, became pregnant while using oral contraceptives in combination with phenytoin. One patient had the child, but died a year after the metastases became apparent, in the other the pregnancy was terminated. When prescribing phenytoin, attention should be paid to fertil... Abstract

British journal of cancer, Volume 66, Issue 5, 1 1 1992, Pages 850-855 Recombinant interferon alpha-2b in patients with metastatic apudomas: effect on tumours and tumour markers. Biesma B, Willemse PH, Mulder NH, Verschueren RC, Kema IP, de Bruijn HW, Postmus PE, Sleijfer DT, de Vries EG
Malignant carcinoid tumours, islet cell tumours and medullary carcinomas of the thyroid are tumours with similar clinical features. In patients with unresectable or metastatic tumours leukocyte interferon (IFN) and recombinant human (rh) IFN have demonstrated efficacy. Twenty-four evaluable patients with progressive tumours were treated with 2.5 megaunits rh IFN alpha-2b, administered once daily subcutaneously, for a median duration of 7 months (range 0.5-37+). Two carcinoid patients demonstrate... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 28-34 Single and dual excitation of the conductance-volume catheter analysed in a spheroidal mathematical model of the canine left ventricle. Steendijk P, van der Velde ET, Baan J
The conductance method employs a multi-electrode catheter to generate an electrical field and measure intracavitary segmental conductances. Left ventricular (LV) volumes are calculated using an algorithm which assumes the electrical field to be homogeneous. This assumption may be violated leading to a non-linear relation between conductance-derived and true volumes. In addition, this relation may vary between segments. A new method is introduced which uses a more homogeneous field. Volume estima... Abstract

The American journal of physiology, Volume 263, Issue 5 Pt 2, 1 1 1992, Pages H1466-78 Anisotropic conduction and reentry in perfused epicardium of rabbit left ventricle. Schalij MJ, Lammers WJ, Rensma PL, Allessie MA
An experimental model of anisotropy was developed, consisting of a thin layer (1 mm) of perfused ventricular epicardium created by cryodestruction of the interventricular septum and the inner four-fifths of the free wall of the left ventricle. The electrophysiological properties of the 1-mm-thick surviving layer were the same as before freezing. Epicardial conduction was mapped with a 192-fold mapping electrode (spatial resolution 1 mm). In the intact ventricle transverse conduction was interrup... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 2-6 Ventricular pressure-volume relations in vivo. Baan J, van der Velde ET, Steendijk P
A number of fundamental mechanical properties of cardiac muscle as well as of the total ventricle are discussed. These include: Starling's law, shortening deactivation, homeometric autoregulation, and so-called hyperactivation associated with a small amount of ejection. Whenever appropriate, muscle properties are related to those of the intact ventricle. The phenomenon of load-dependence of the end-systolic pressure-volume relationship (ESPVR) receives particular attention and is placed wit... Abstract

Journal of vascular research, Volume 29, Issue 6, 1 1 1992, Pages 426-434 Thrombogenicity and intimal hyperplasia after conventional and thermal balloon dilation in normal rabbit iliac arteries. van Erven L, Velema E, Bos AN, Post MJ, Borst C
Acute occlusion and restenosis are the major complications of percutaneous transluminal coronary balloon angioplasty. Application of heat during balloon dilation was postulated to reduce these complications. We evaluated thrombogenicity and intimal hyperplasia of normal rabbit iliac arteries after conventional (37 degrees C) and thermal balloon dilation. Thermal dilation was performed with a radio-frequency-heated balloon, provided with three thermocouples attached to the inside of the balloon s... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 13 Suppl E, 1 1 1992, Pages 15-21 Left ventricular segmental volume by conductance catheter and Cine-CT. van der Velde ET, van Dijk AD, Steendijk P, Diethelm L, Chagas T, Lipton MJ, Glanz SA, Baan J
The ability of the conductance catheter method to measure left ventricular segmental and total volume was evaluated by comparison with the Cine-CT technique. In the seven dogs studied, 19 conductance catheter and simultaneous Cine-CT runs were obtained. High correlation coefficients were found for total volume and segmental volumes, except in the basal segment. However, in most cases there was a significant variability in slope and intercept between animals. Both methods are promising tools for... Abstract
