Immunology, Volume 67, Issue 1, 1 1 1989, Pages 120-125 Complement-mediated enhancement of IgA-induced H2O2 release by human polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Gorter A, Hiemstra PS, Leijh PC, van der Sluys ME, van den Barselaar MT, Van Es LA, Daha MR
In a previous study we have demonstrated that heat-killed Staphylococcus aureus opsonized with either purified human serum IgA or secretory IgA (sIgA) can induce a respiratory burst (measured as H2O2 release) in human polymorphonuclear leucocytes (PMN; Gorter et al., 1987). In the present study we have investigated whether opsonization of IgA-coated staphylococci with complement has an additional effect on the H2O2 release of PMN. It was demonstrated that staphylococci coated with IgA (or sIgA)... Abstract

Journal of bacteriology, Volume 171, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 2819-2826 Cloning and characterization of a gene encoding an outer membrane protein required for siderophore-mediated uptake of Fe3+ in Pseudomonas putida WCS358. Marugg JD, de Weger LA, Nielander HB, Oorthuizen M, Recourt K, Lugtenberg B, van der Hofstad GA, Weisbeek PJ
In iron-limited environments plant-growth-stimulating Pseudomonas putida WCS358 produces a yellow-green fluorescent siderophore called pseudobactin 358. Ferric pseudobactin 358 is efficiently taken up by cells of WCS358 but not by cells of another rhizophere-colonizing strain, Pseudomonas fluorescens WCS374. A gene bank containing partial Sau3A DNA fragments from WCS358 was constructed in a derivative of the broad-host-range cosmid pLAFR1. By mobilization of this gene bank to strain WCS374 a cos... The American review of respiratory disease, Volume 139, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 1244-1250 Antileukoprotease-containing bronchiolar cells. Relationship with morphologic disease of small airways and parenchyma. Willems LN, Kramps JA, Stijnen T, Sterk PJ, Weening JJ, Dijkman JH
Twenty-seven surgically removed lungs and lobes were studied to assess the relation between the abundance of bronchiolar epithelial cells containing antileukoprotease (ALP) (ALP-pos/mm) and the degree of small airways disease (SADscore) and emphysema (destructive index = DI, and number of normal alveolar attachments on membranous bronchioles = normal AA/min). Between subjects, ALPpos/mm correlated with SADscore in membranous bronchioles (rs = 0.75; p less than 0.001) and with normal AA/mm (rs =... Abstract

Molecular microbiology, Volume 3, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 645-652 Detection and identification of FaeC as a minor component of K88 fibrillae of Escherichia coli. Oudega B, de Graaf M, de Boer L, Bakker D, Vader CE, Mooi FR, de Graaf FK
A tribrid gene containing ompF, faeC, and lacZ sequences was constructed by subcloning a large central segment of the K88ab gene encoding the fibrillar subunit-like protein FaeC into the open reading frame expression vector pORF2. The resulting tribrid protein was isolated and used to raise antibodies against the FaeC protein. These antibodies were then used for the detection and subcellular localization of the FaeC protein in Escherichia coli harbouring the K88ab-encoding plasmid pFM205 or muta... Abstract

Neurilemmoma, neurofibroma and neuroma are benign neoplasms of nerve tissue. These arise from components of the peripheral nerves. They are extremely rare within the jaws. Schwannoma or neurilemmoma may occur along the route of any of the peripheral cranial or sympathetic nerves. The source of origin is thought to be the schwann cells. Its appearance in oral and paraoral regions is not rare. Treatment is surgical and the prognosis is excellent. It has no tendency toward recurrence. Our schwannom... Abstract

Journal of bacteriology, Volume 171, Issue 5, 1 1 1989, Pages 2756-2761 Mutational changes in physiochemical cell surface properties of plant-growth-stimulating Pseudomonas spp. do not influence the attachment properties of the cells. de Weger LA, van Loosdrecht MC, Klaassen HE, Lugtenberg B
Bacteriophage-resistant mutant strains of the root-colonizing Pseudomonas strains WCS358 and WCS374 lack the O-antigenic side chain of the lipopolysaccharide, as was shown by the loss of the typical lipopolysaccharide ladder pattern after analysis by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. These strains differed from their parent strains in cell surface hydrophobicity and in cell surface charge. The observed variation in these physicochemical characteristics could be explained... Cardiovascular research, Volume 23, Issue 4, 1 1 1989, Pages 308-314 Comparison of myocardial changes between pressure induced hypertrophy and normal growth in the rat heart. van der Laarse A, Vliegen HW, van der Nat KH, Hollaar L, Egas JM, Swier GP, van den Broek AJ
To evaluate differences in tissue composition between hearts with pressure overload hypertrophy and normal hearts of comparable weight, 30 rat hearts with aortic constriction of 4, 10 and 30 days, and nine hearts of sham operated controls were studied. Surgery was performed at age 70 days. Morphometric analysis of myocardial tissue sections revealed (1) myocyte hypertrophy in left ventricular myocardium of hypertrophic hearts was proportional to heart weight, and in normal growth myocyte volume... To investigate biochemical characteristics of hypertrophic myocardium of young and adult humans, we analysed myocardial biopsies obtained from 28 mainly young patients undergoing cardiac surgery for congenital heart disease and 41 autopsied hearts from 18 adult normal and 23 hypertrophic human subjects. Myocardial activities of the enzymes creatine kinase and lactate dehydrogenase were independent of age during childhood, but decreased significantly with hypertrophy at adult age. Myocyte nuclei... Molecular immunology, Volume 26, Issue 3, 1 1 1989, Pages 275-281 Binding of human IgA1 and IgA1 fragments to jacalin. Biewenga J, Hiemstra PS, Steneker I, Daha MR
Interaction of jacalin, an N-terminal galactose specific lectin, with human IgA1 and IgA1 fragments was investigated. IgA1 and all galactose containing fragments bound to jacalin-Sepharose, including Fab fragments containing only the galNac linked to serine-224 and Fc fragments containing four gal-galNac sequences. These data indicate that both the galNac and gal-galNac sequences can interact with jacalin. Jacalin precipitated IgA1 and the fragments F(abc)2, F(ab')2 and Fc in agar gel and f... Abstract

Journal of immunology (Baltimore, Md. : 1950), Volume 142, Issue 6, 1 1 1989, Pages 2024-2030 Biosynthesis of complement factor H by human umbilical vein endothelial cells. Regulation by T cell growth factor and IFN-gamma. Brooimans RA, Hiemstra PS, van der Ark AA, Sim RB, van Es LA, Daha MR
The present studies were initiated to characterize a 150-kDa molecule with inhibitory activity for C3bBb formation, which is present in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Therefore, human endothelial culture supernatants (HECS) were analyzed for the presence of human complement factor H by ELISA. It was found that H was present in HECS. An immunoblot analysis of affinity purified H from HECS showed that the size of HUVEC H was identical to that of plasma H. The mean production of H... Abstract

Fibbe WE, Daha MR, Hiemstra PS, Duinkerken N, Lurvink E, Ralph P, Altrock BW, Kaushansky K, Willemze R, Falkenburg JH
Electrophoretically pure human interleukin 1 (IL-1) beta was found to stimulate human endothelial cells in monolayer culture to elaborate colony-stimulating activity (CSA). Supernatant fluids from cultures stimulated with increasing concentrations of IL-1 were found to stimulate colony formation of myeloid (CFU-GM), erythroid (BFU-E), and multipotent (CFU-GEMM) progenitor cells in a dose-dependent fashion. The effect on mixed colony formation, however, was less than on CFU-GM and BFU-E growth. S... Abstract

Ten patients with priapism after self-administered intracavernous papaverine injection for erectile impotence had to be treated as emergencies between September 1985 and February 1988. In half the patients it was possible to achieve penile detumescence by puncture of the corpora cavernosa, injection of 2-5 mg metaraminol or both, but failed in the remainder, requiring the intracavernous injection of 10-30 mg metaraminol in 500 ml physiological saline. Surgical treatment was necessary in one case... Abstract

British journal of cancer, Volume 59, Issue 2, 1 1 1989, Pages 254-256 High dose etoposide for brain metastases of small cell lung cancer. A phase II study. The EORTC Lung Cancer Cooperative Group. Postmus PE, Haaxma-Reiche H, Sleijfer DT, Kirkpatrick A, McVie JG, Kleisbauer JP
Symptomatic brain metastases are found in about 40% of patients with small cell lung cancer. Cranial irradiation is the first line treatment for this form of metastatic disease. Frequently brain metastases recur after this treatment or develop after prophylactic cranial irradiation. For these patients no effective antitumour therapy is available. In this study the efficacy of high dose etoposide 1.5 g m-2 was evaluated. In 10 (43%) out of 23 evaluable patients a response was seen. Toxicity was s... Abstract
