Three murine microbicidal proteins (MUMPs) were purified from cells of the murine macrophage cell line RAW264.7 that had been activated by gamma interferon. Similar proteins were also present in nonactivated RAW264.7 cells, in cells of the murine macrophage cell line J774A.1, and in resident and activated murine peritoneal macrophages. MUMP-1, MUMP-2, and MUMP-3 killed Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Mycobacterium fortuitum, and Cryptococc... Abstract

Journal of virology, Volume 67, Issue 7, 1 1 1993, Pages 4237-4245 cis-acting elements in the lytic origin of DNA replication of Epstein-Barr virus. Schepers A, Pich D, Mankertz J, Hammerschmidt W
oriLyt, the cis-acting element of Epstein-Barr virus, mediates viral DNA replication in the lytic phase of the virus's life cycle. Oligonucleotide-directed in vitro mutagenesis of oriLyt plasmids allowed the identification of two noncontiguous components within the complex structure of oriLyt. Both components were indispensable for DNA replication of this origin. The upstream component colocalized with the promoter of the viral BHLF1-encoding gene, and mutants affecting DNA replication affe... Abstract

The conductance method employs a multielectrode catheter to measure intracavitary electric conductance from which left ventricular volume is estimated. A dual-excitation method introduced by us uses a more homogeneous electric field and thereby should enable more accurate volume estimation. In six anesthetized open-chest dogs we compared stroke volume obtained from electromagnetic flow probes with the conventional single-excitation method and with the new dual-excitation conductance method. Veterinary immunology and immunopathology, Volume 36, Issue 4, 1 1 1993, Pages 369-378 Effects of inoculum route and dose on the immune response of common carp, Cyprinus carpio to the blood parasite, Trypanoplasma borreli. Jones SR, Palmen M, van Muiswinkel WB
Carp were inoculated intramuscularly (im) or intraperitoneally (ip) with different doses of live Trypanoplasma borreli. Prepatent period was shortened by using the im route and by increasing the dose. Haematocrit was reduced following im inoculation with 9.5 x 10(5) parasites. Most fish recovered between 8 and 13 weeks post-inoculation (wpi). Neither parasitaemia nor anaemia was detected in any recovered fish following homologous challenge. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was developed to q... Abstract

Nutricion hospitalaria, Volume 8, Issue 5, 1 1 1993, Pages 279-287 [Effect of increasing protein ingestion on the nitrogen balance of mechanically ventilated critically ill patients receiving total parenteral nutrition]. van der Heijden A, Verbeek MJ, Schreurs VV, Akkermans LM, Vos A
The amount of protein recommended to minimise N loss in critically ill patients receiving total parenteral nutrition (TPN) varies in the literature. Therefore, we studied the effect of increased protein intake on the N balance, administering TPN with either 1.2 g protein/kg/day (low N diet) or 1.8 g protein/kg/day (high N diet). Fifteen mechanically ventilated critically ill patients were studied in a surgical intensive care unit. After at least two days of standard TPN, patients were randomly a... Abstract

European heart journal, Volume 14, Issue 4, 1 1 1993, Pages 456-463 Quantitation of global and regional left ventricular function by cine magnetic resonance imaging during dobutamine stress in normal human subjects. van Rugge FP, Holman ER, van der Wall EE, de Roos A, van der Laarse A, Bruschke AV
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides high-resolution images of the heart. However, physical exercise during MRI is difficult due to space restriction and motion artefacts. To evaluate the feasibility of MRI during stress conditions, dobutamine was used as an alternative to exercise. Haemodynamics, ventricular volumes and wall thickening were measured at rest and during peak dobutamine infusion (15 micrograms.kg-1 x min-1) in 23 normal human subjects. To calculate left ventricular volumes, e... Abstract

Journal of cardiovascular pharmacology, Volume 21, Issue 4, 1 1 1993, Pages 552-559 Comparison of diltiazem standard formulation and diltiazem controlled release in patients with stable angina pectoris: a randomized, double-blind, cross-over, multicenter study. Vliegen HW, van der Wall EE, Kragten JA, Holwerda NJ, Schenkel WM, Muijs van de Moer WM, ten Kate JB, Mulder PG, Bruschke AV
In a randomized, double-blind, cross-over, multicenter study with a placebo run-in phase, the efficacy and safety of two oral formulations of diltiazem, standard three or four times daily (t.i.d. or q.i.d.) and controlled release twice daily (b.i.d.), were compared in 49 patients with stable angina pectoris. ST-segment depression at maximum exercise 12 h after tablet intake was less frequently observed with diltiazem controlled release than with standard diltiazem (34 of 49, 69% vs. 43 of 49, 88... Eighty-one patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) with a survival of more than 2 years after start of chemotherapy were studied. Twenty-six of the 28 patients who died of relapsed SCLC had in fact relapsed before two years and of the 55 who had not then only two (4%) relapsed subsequently. It is stressed that with such observations treatment related factors should be taken in account. Second tumours were observed in ten patients, nine proven malignant. Of the eight patients with non-small c... Abstract

The effect of coronary occlusion and reperfusion on myocardial electrical resistivity was studied in nine anesthetized open-chest dogs. Anisotropic resistivity was measured on the anterior free wall of the left ventricle (LV) before (control) and during transient occlusion of the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery, and during reperfusion. To measure local resistivity longitudinal (RL) and transverse (RT) to epicardial muscle fiber direction, a sensor was developed based on the four e... Abstract

Pulmonary pharmacology, Volume 6, Issue 1, 1 1 1993, Pages 33-39 Potency of an oxidation-resistant mutant of secretory leukocyte proteinase inhibitor in lipopolysaccharide-induced emphysema in hamsters. Stolk J, Heinzel-Wieland R, Saunders D, Dijkman JH, Steffens G
Secretory leukocyte inhibitor (SLPI) is a potent inhibitor of serine proteinases, but sensitive to oxidative inactivation due to a methionine residue in the active centre of the inhibitor. We compared the potency of an oxidation-resistant mutant of recombinant SLPI with native recombinant SLPI in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced emphysema in the hamster. Application of this oxidation-resistant mutant reduced the induced emphysema by 70 and 85% in two separate series of experiments. In contrast,... Abstract

Pediatric research, Volume 33, Issue 3, 1 1 1993, Pages 295-301 Myocardial perfusion and performance after indomethacin administration in newborn lambs. Klautz RJ, van Bel F, Teitel DF, Steendijk P, Baan J
Indomethacin is a drug widely used to achieve pharmacologic closure of a patent ductus arteriosus in the premature infant. In several vascular beds (brain, kidney, intestine), indomethacin has been shown to cause vasoconstriction. Possible negative effects on myocardial blood flow and performance could be deleterious in premature infants with limited cardiac reserve. Before, during, and 30 and 60 min after administration of 1 mg.kg-1 of indomethacin in nine newborn lambs, we measured coronary bl... Abstract

Chest, Volume 103, Issue 2, 1 1 1993, Pages 528-531 Interatrial right-to-left shunting developing after pulmonary resection in the absence of elevated right-sided heart pressures. Review of the literature. Smeenk FW, Postmus PE
Considering the literature, a symptomatic right-to-left (R-L) shunt through a persistent foramen ovale (PFO), developing after a pulmonary resection, can occur without elevated right-sided heart pressures, but its frequency seems to be very low. However, considering the high frequency of a PFO in the normal population (20 percent) and the high frequency of pulmonary resections carried out today, it might be possible that this kind of complication is occurring more frequently, possibly in a more... Experiments were performed to test whether recombinant secretory leukocyte proteinase inhibitor (rSLPI) was able to prevent the development of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-mediated pulmonary emphysema, hemorrhage, and secretory cell metaplasia (SCM) in hamsters. Several groups of eight animals were intratracheally treated for four weeks, twice a week with 0.5 mg Escherichia coli LPS or with saline. In the first experiment, an additional group of eight hamsters was treated with 0.5 mg LPS mixed with... Abstract

European journal of cancer (Oxford, England : 1990), Volume 29A, Issue 2, 1 1 1993, Pages 204-207 Testing the possible non-cross resistance of two equipotent combination chemotherapy regimens against small-cell lung cancer: a phase II study of the EORTC Lung Cancer Cooperative Group. Postmus PE, Smit EF, Kirkpatrick A, Splinter TA
The Goldie-Coldman hypothesis of alternating non-cross resistant combination chemotherapy regimens for small-cell lung cancer has never been adequately evaluated. In previously reported studies non-cross resistance and/or equipotency of the combinations used had not been tested before the phase III study was started. We describe two combination chemotherapy regimens with comparable efficacy against small-cell lung cancer and present a phase II test of their possible non-cross resistance. Patient... Abstract

Patients with brain metastases from small cell lung cancer (SCLC) have a poor prognosis. Although most patients die from metastatic disease outside the central nervous system, this disabling metastatic site often needs treatment to mitigate the signs and symptoms of intracranial disease. The effect of carboplatin (400 mg/m2 every 4 weeks) as second line treatment for recurrent or progressive brain metastases was studied in 20 SCLC patients. 19 patients could be evaluated: 16 by contrast enhanced...
