The New England journal of medicine, Volume 338, Issue 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 86-93 The role of a common variant of the cholesteryl ester transfer protein gene in the progression of coronary atherosclerosis. The Regression Growth Evaluation Statin Study Group. Kuivenhoven JA, Jukema JW, Zwinderman AH, de Knijff P, McPherson R, Bruschke AV, Lie KI, Kastelein JJ
Background: The high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol concentration is inversely related to the risk of coronary artery disease. The cholesteryl ester transfer protein (CETP) has a central role in the metabolism of this lipoprotein and may therefore alter the susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Methods: The DNA of 807 men with angiographically documented coronary atherosclerosis was analyzed for the presence of a polymorphism in the gene coding for CETP. The presence of this DNA variation wa... Abstract

Molecular plant-microbe interactions : MPMI, Volume 11, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 45-56 A two-component system plays an important role in the root-colonizing ability of Pseudomonas fluorescens strain WCS365. Dekkers LC, Bloemendaal CJ, de Weger LA, Wijffelman CA, Spaink HP, Lugtenberg BJ
We describe the characterization of a novel Tn5lacZ colonization mutant of the efficiently colonizing Pseudomonas fluorescens strain WCS365, mutant strain PCL1210, which is at least 300- to 1,000-fold impaired in colonization of the potato root tip after co-inoculation of potato stem cuttings with a 1:1 mixture of mutant and parental cells. Similarly, the mutant is also impaired in colonization of tomato, wheat, and radish, indicating that the gene involved plays a role in the ability of P. fluo... Abstract

Oncology (Williston Park, N.Y.), Volume 12, Issue 1 Suppl 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 25-30 Small-cell lung cancer: is there a standard therapy? Postmus PE, Smit EF
For more than 25 years, chemotherapy has been the cornerstone of treatment for small-cell lung cancer. Many studies have tested a wide variety of drugs in different combinations, resulting in a number of standard combination chemotherapy options. Radiotherapy to the primary tumor, after having been out of favor for a time, is now considered an element of standard therapy for patients with limited disease, although a number of questions remain concerning its optimal use. Because the overall outco... Abstract

Journal of virology, Volume 72, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 862-867 Identification of the leader-body junctions for the viral subgenomic mRNAs and organization of the simian hemorrhagic fever virus genome: evidence for gene duplication during arterivirus evolution. Godeny EK, de Vries AA, Wang XC, Smith SL, de Groot RJ
Simian hemorrhagic fever virus (SHFV) was recently reclassified and assigned to the new virus family Arteriviridae. During replication, arteriviruses produce a 3' coterminal, nested set of subgenomic mRNAs (sgRNAs). These sgRNAs arise by discontinuous transcription, and each contains a 5' leader sequence which is joined to the body of the mRNA through a conserved junction sequence. Only the 5'-most open reading frame (ORF) is believed to be transcribed from each sgRNA. The SHFV ge... Abstract

Magnetic resonance imaging, Volume 16, Issue 2, 1 1 1998, Pages 137-145 A new diagnostic approach to vascular rings and pulmonary slings: the role of MRI. Beekman RP, Hazekamp MG, Sobotka MA, Meijboom EJ, de Roos A, Staalman CR, Beek FJ, Ottenkamp J
Unlabelled: The conventional diagnostic work-up of a patient suspected of having a vascular cause for stridor, or dysphagia, includes esophagography and bronchoscopy to delineate the abnormal structure without imaging the structure itself. Cine-angiography is regarded as the golden standard, but is not routinely performed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is non-invasive and has the important advantage over cine-angiography of depicting all structures in the field of view. Color Doppler echocard... Abstract

European journal of cancer (Oxford, England : 1990), Volume 34, Issue 1, 1 1 1998, Pages 199-202 Effects of gemcitabine on renal function in patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Gietema JA, Groen HJ, Meijer S, Smit EF
Gemcitabine is a novel fluorine-substituted cytarabine (Ara-C) analogue with activity against a range of solid tumours. Besides dose-limiting haematological toxicity, renal side-effects were observed from phase I and II studies concerning elevations of serum creatinine, proteinuria and erythrocyturia. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of gemcitabine on renal function in 11 untreated patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Gemcitabine was given as weekly infusions of 1... Abstract
Statistics in medicine, Volume 16, Issue 24, 1 1 1997, Pages 2829-2841 On the statistical modelling of coronary arteriographic data: dynamics of coronary atherosclerosis related to systemic and focal parameters. REGRESS Study Group. Regression Growth Evaluation Statin Study. Zwinderman AH, Jukema JW, van Boven AJ, Reiber JH
Existing methods to analyse data from repeated arteriographic progression/regression studies are restrictive and do not fully explore the dynamics of coronary artherosclerosis. We present a new approach making a distinction between new occlusions, new lesions, and growth of existing lesions. Random effect models, based on the logistic, the Poisson, and the normal distribution are proposed with correlation depending on distance. The data from the Regression Growth Evaluation Statin Study (REGRESS... Abstract

Scandinavian journal of immunology, Volume 46, Issue 6, 1 1 1997, Pages 597-600 Difference in binding of killed and live Streptococcus pneumoniae serotypes by C-reactive protein. de Beaufort AJ, Langermans JA, Matze-van der Lans AM, Hiemstra PS, Vossen JM, van Furth R
The binding and opsonic properties of C-reactive protein (CRP) for various species of bacteria were investigated. CRP bound more avidly to killed than to live Streptococcus pneumoniae, the binding varying among various serotypes; CRP hardly bound to a number of other bacterial species studied. CRP enhanced complement-dependent phagocytosis of live S. pneumoniae by granulocytes but did not enhance the phagocytosis of live Staphylococcus aureus or group B streptococci. We suppose that CRP may serv... Abstract

We investigated the relationship between heart rate and contractility in seven anaesthetized young piglets by measuring contractility at different atrial pacing rates. To study the origin of this relationship we repeated the measurements after blocking the sarcoplasmic reticulum calcium release channel with ryanodine. We assessed contractility using indices derived from instantaneous left ventricular pressure and volume measured by micromanometric and conductance catheters during rapid inferior... Abstract
