American journal of respiratory and critical care medicine, Volume 150, Issue 6 Pt 1, 1 1 1994, Pages 1628-1631 Apocynin improves the efficacy of secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor in experimental emphysema. Stolk J, Rossie W, Dijkman JH
Secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) is a potent proteinase inhibitor produced in the lung. Stimulated neutrophils at sites of inflammation can inactivate SLPI by myeloperoxidase-mediated oxidation of the methionine residue in the active site of SLPI. Apocynin is a selective inhibitor of NADPH oxidase and may therefore protect SLPI against neutrophil-mediated oxidative inactivation. The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of apocynin on the efficacy of SLPI in preventin... Abstract

Gastroenterology, Volume 107, Issue 5, 1 1 1994, Pages 1449-1456 Inactive urokinase and increased levels of its inhibitor type 1 in colorectal cancer liver metastasis. Sier CF, Vloedgraven HJ, Ganesh S, Griffioen G, Quax PH, Verheijen JH, Dooijewaard G, Welvaart K, van de Velde CJ, Lamers CB
Background/aims: Human colorectal carcinogenesis was previously found to be associated with an increased urokinase-type plasminogen activator expression, both in antigen and activity, accompanied by simultaneously enhanced levels of plasminogen activator inhibitors type 1 and type 2. This increased proteolytic activity may contribute to invasive growth and metastasis of the tumors. Methods: In the present study, homogenates of liver metastases, primary colorectal carcinomas, and adjacent normal... Abstract

Surgical endoscopy, Volume 8, Issue 11, 1 1 1994, Pages 1335-1337 Liver fibrosis after extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy of gallbladder stones. A case report. Plaisier PW, Hamming JF, van der Hul RL, den Toom R, Bruining HA
We encountered significant liver fibrosis in a healthy young patient undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy for symptomatic gallstone disease. Twelve months prior to cholecystectomy the patient underwent multiple extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy (ESWL) sessions with adjuvant oral bile-acid therapy. Since the site of fibrosis corresponded clearly to the shock-wave transmission path, which was in accordance with animal studies, it was concluded that this liver fibrosis was a side effect of b... The American journal of physiology, Volume 267, Issue 5 Pt 2, 1 1 1994, Pages H1895-906 Determinants of end-systolic pressure during different load alterations in the in situ left ventricle. van der Linden LP, van der Velde ET, van Houwelingen HC, Bruschke AV, Baan J
Because of the strong dependency of the end-systolic pressure-volume relation on the type of transient loading intervention in the in situ left ventricle (LV), experiments in the basal inotropic state in 16 open-chest anesthetized dogs were reanalyzed to find additional variables to model and predict end-systolic pressure (ESP) of both afterloading and preloading interventions by a single equation. Random-coefficients regression analysis was performed on 22 experiments in the basal inotropic sta... Abstract

The British journal of nutrition, Volume 72, Issue 4, 1 1 1994, Pages 567-577 Dietary fructose v. glucose in rats raises urinary excretion, true absorption and ileal solubility of magnesium but decreases magnesium retention. van der Heijden A, van den Berg GJ, Lemmens AG, Beynen AC
Apparent Mg absorption, that is Mg intake minus faecal excretion, was found to be greater in rats fed on diets containing fructose instead of glucose. This effect of fructose was accompanied by enhanced urinary excretion and diminished retention of Mg. True Mg absorption was then determined with the use of oral and intraperitoneal administration of tracer doses of 28 Mg. True Mg absorption was significantly greater in rats fed on fructose. There was no significant effect of fructose v. glucose o... Abstract

Pflugers Archiv : European journal of physiology, Volume 428, Issue 3-4, 1 1 1994, Pages 296-299 A novel two-compartment culture dish allows microscopic evaluation of two different treatments in one cell culture simultaneously. Influence of external pH on Na+/Ca2+ exchanger activity in cultured rat cardiomyocytes. Atsma DE, Bastiaanse EM, Ince C, van der Laarse A
A new type of culture dish containing two separate compartments is described, that can be used in high-magnification microscopy. Using the dish, two halves of a single-cell culture, grown on a standard coverslip, can be exposed to different treatments simultaneously, allowing the effect of one treatment to be compared with that of the other treatment in the same culture. This way, the natural variability that might exist between different individual cultures is circumvented. In addition, by simu... Abstract

The Journal of general virology, Volume 75 ( Pt 9), 1 1 1994, Pages 2439-2444 Monoclonal antibodies to equine arteritis virus proteins identify the GL protein as a target for virus neutralization. Deregt D, de Vries AA, Raamsman MJ, Elmgren LD, Rottier PJ
Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) to equine arteritis virus (EAV) proteins were produced and characterized. The protein specificities of eight MAbs were determined definitively by immunoprecipitation of EAV proteins expressed from vaccinia virus recombinants (VVRs). Included were two new VVRs produced for this study, expressing the M and the GL proteins, respectively. Three MAbs were determined to be N-specific and five MAbs recognized the GL protein. One GL-specific MAb, 17F5, of the IgA class, effi... Abstract

Der Urologe. Ausg. A, Volume 33, Issue 5, 1 1 1994, Pages 392-400 [Urologic complications after kidney transplantation. Experiences in a center with 539 recipients]. Conrad S, Schneider AW, Gonnermann D, Ganama A, Tenschert W, Huland H
A total of 539 renal transplantations were performed at the Department of Urology of the University Hospital of Hamburg between 1984 and 1991. 132 (24.5%) patients developed urological complications (by definition, complications occurring as a result of the operative procedure). In 31 cases the transplants had to be removed secondary to urological complications, and 4 patients died of such complications (mortality 0.7%, lethality 3.0%). Urinary tract infections occurred in 13.2% of all patients... Abstract

The Journal of urology, Volume 152, Issue 3, 1 1 1994, Pages 906-909 Endo-urological cold-knife incision for ureteral stenosis after renal transplantation. Conrad S, Schneider AW, Tenschert W, Meyer-Moldenhauer WH, Huland H
Cold-knife incision of stenoses in the transplant ureter was performed in 11 patients with upper urinary tract obstruction in renal transplants. The operations were complicated by bleeding in 2 patients and the graft had to be removed in 1 of them. The stenoses could be treated successfully in 10 of the 11 patients (91%) and the mean serum creatinine concentration decreased significantly from 3.4 to 1.8 mg./dl. After a mean of 26 months only 1 obstruction recurred, so the long-term success rate... Abstract

Basic research in cardiology, Volume 89, Issue 5, 1 1 1994, Pages 411-426 Dependence of anisotropic myocardial electrical resistivity on cardiac phase and excitation frequency. Steendijk P, van der Velde ET, Baan J
Knowledge of myocardial electrical resistivity is of interest because passive electrical properties govern the electrotonic spread of current through the myocardium and influence the shape and velocity of the excitation wave. In addition, measurements of myocardial resistivity may provide information about tissue structure and components. The aim of the present study was to determine the excitation frequency dependence and the changes during the cardiac cycle of anisotropic myocardial electrical... Abstract

Arteriosclerosis and thrombosis : a journal of vascular biology, Volume 14, Issue 9, 1 1 1994, Pages 1459-1465 Tissue-type plasminogen activator and its inhibitor in rat aorta. Effect of endotoxin. Padró T, Quax PH, van den Hoogen CM, Roholl P, Verheijen JH, Emeis JJ
Plasminogen activator (PA) and PA inhibitor (PAI) antigen, activity, and mRNA were analyzed in the three layers of rat aorta, and the effect of endotoxin on PA and PAI was studied. All PA activity in aorta was identified as tissue-type PA (TPA) activity; no urokinase-type PA was detected. In the tunica adventitia TPA activity, TPA antigen, and TPA mRNA were detected, whereas in the tunica media TPA antigen and TPA mRNA, but no TPA activity, were found. PAI activity was detected in the tunica med... Abstract

Archives of biochemistry and biophysics, Volume 313, Issue 1, 1 1 1994, Pages 58-63 The effect of sarcolemmal cholesterol content on intracellular calcium ion concentration in cultured cardiomyocytes. Bastiaanse EM, Atsma DE, Kuijpers MM, Van der Laarse A
In this study the relationship between sarcolemmal free cholesterol content and intracellular calcium ion concentration ([Ca2+]i) was explored. In cultured neonatal rat cardiomyocytes the cellular free cholesterol content was modulated by treatment with liposomes. Using cholesterol-rich or cholesterol-free liposomes, sarcolemmal free cholesterol content was raised or diminished, respectively. An increased sarcolemmal free cholesterol content resulted in a decreased sarcolemmal fluidity, whereas... Abstract

American journal of respiratory cell and molecular biology, Volume 11, Issue 1, 1 1 1994, Pages 95-102 Characteristics of the inhibition of NADPH oxidase activation in neutrophils by apocynin, a methoxy-substituted catechol. Stolk J, Hiltermann TJ, Dijkman JH, Verhoeven AJ
Phagocytes are able to generate reactive oxygen species by an activatable NADPH oxidase system. We investigated the inhibition of NADPH oxidase activation by a methoxy-substituted catechol, apocynin. Oxygen uptake by neutrophils incubated with 300 microM apocynin was completely inhibited at 7 min after addition of serum-treated zymosan (STZ), with a lagtime of inhibition of 2 to 3 min. The lagtime of effect of apocynin in neutrophils relatively deficient of myeloperoxidase was about 50% longer w... Abstract

Laboratory investigation; a journal of technical methods and pathology, Volume 71, Issue 1, 1 1 1994, Pages 61-66 Quantitation of DNA topoisomerase II alpha messenger ribonucleic acid levels in a small cell lung cancer cell line and two drug resistant sublines using a polymerase chain reaction-aided transcript titration assay. Withoff S, Smit EF, Meersma GJ, van den Berg A, Timmer-Bosscha H, Kok K, Postmus PE, Mulder NH, de Vries EG, Buys CH
Background: We have modified a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-aided transcript titration assay (1) in order to allow quantitation of low amounts of DNA topoisomerase II alpha mRNA in small RNA samples. Experimental design: The titration assay was used to quantitate the amount of DNA topoisomerase II alpha mRNA in a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, GLC4 and its drug-resistant sublines, GLC4/ADR and GLC4/CDDP. These cell lines show differences in DNA topoisomerase II alpha protein level... Abstract

The European respiratory journal, Volume 7, Issue 7, 1 1 1994, Pages 1281-1284 Treatment of patients with spontaneous pneumothorax during videothoracoscopy. Janssen JP, van Mourik J, Cuesta Valentin M, Sutedja G, Gigengack K, Postmus PE
Thoracoscopy for spontaneous pneumothorax has been performed over the years by many pulmonologists. The aim of the procedure was merely diagnostic: the detection of blebs and bullae. Therapeutic modalities were restricted to chemical pleurodesis. The development of videothoracoscopy has made more complex interventions, such as bullectomy possible. A protocol for videothoracoscopic treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax, with all treatment modalities in one session, has been developed. All patient... Abstract

There is a well-known association between colon carcinoma and bacteraemia with Streptococcus bovis biotype I. There are also associations, less well known, with other streptococci of the viridans group. In three patients, a man of 44, a woman of 53 and one of 52 years old, colorectal carcinomas were diagnosed in association with bacteraemia with S. salivarius, S. milleri, and S. salivarius respectively.
