Circulation, Volume 107, Issue 19, 12 2 2003, Pages 2416-2421 Variants of toll-like receptor 4 modify the efficacy of statin therapy and the risk of cardiovascular events. Boekholdt SM, Agema WR, Peters RJ, Zwinderman AH, van der Wall EE, Reitsma PH, Kastelein JJ, Jukema JW, REgression GRowth Evaluation Statin Study Group
Background: Atherosclerosis is increasingly considered to be a chronic inflammatory process. We examined whether genetic variants of the toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which are correlated with impaired innate immunity and with progression of carotid atherosclerosis, are also associated with coronary atherosclerosis and predict the risk of cardiovascular events. Methods and results: Two polymorphisms of the TLR4 gene (Asp299Gly and Thr399Ile) were determined in 655 men with angiographically docume... Abstract

Atherosclerosis, Volume 168, Issue 1, 1 1 2003, Pages 131-138 A novel functional polymorphism in the PECAM-1 gene (53G>A) is associated with progression of atherosclerosis in the LOCAT and REGRESS studies. Elrayess MA, Webb KE, Flavell DM, Syvänne M, Taskinen MR, Frick MH, Nieminen MS, Kesäniemi YA, Pasternack A, Jukema JW, Kastelein JJ, Zwinderman AH, Humphries SE
A 53G>A polymorphism identified in the 5' untranslated region (5'UTR) of the platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule-1 (PECAM-1) gene alters a putative shear stress responsive element (SSRE). PECAM-1 was shown to be responsive to shear stress and transient transfection of human umbilical vein endothelial cell (HUVECs) with two luciferase reporter constructs driven by the PECAM-1 promoter and 5'UTR showed a response of the 53G allele, not the 53A allele, to shear stress. Ass... Abstract

Netherlands heart journal : monthly journal of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology and the Netherlands Heart Foundation, Volume 11, Issue 5, 1 1 2003, Pages 203-209 Simultaneous measurement of right and left ventricular volume by the conductance catheter technique in the newborn lamb. Cardozo RH, de Vroomen M, van Bel F, Baan J, Steendijk P
Background: Measurement of absolute ventricular volume with the conductance catheter technique has been documented extensively for the left ventricle (LV). More recently, the same technique has been applied in studies of right ventricular (RV) performance. In the present study we performed simultaneous measurements of LV and RV volumes. Conversion of measured conductances to absolute volumes requires the assessment of slope factor alpha (α) and parallel conductance correction volume (Vc) for bot... Abstract

Lung cancer (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Volume 40, Issue 2, 1 1 2003, Pages 165-172 Suprabasal p53 immunostaining in premalignant endobronchial lesions in combination with histology is associated with bronchial cancer. Breuer RH, Snijders PJ, Sutedja TG, v d Linden H, Risse EK, Meijer CJ, Postmus PE, Smit EF
Endobronchial carcinoma develops through a continuum of morphologically recognizable pre-neoplastic changes. At present, no marker has been identified that can reliably predict the biological behavior of these lesions. Endobronchial lesions (n=39) sampled from patients (n=20) without clinically overt lung cancer, were analyzed by immunohistochemistry (IHC) for abnormal expression regarding the p53 protein, i.e. suprabasal p53 expression. Clear suprabasal p53 immunostaining was found in two (12%)... Abstract

Journal of nuclear medicine : official publication, Society of Nuclear Medicine, Volume 44, Issue 5, 1 1 2003, Pages 739-744 Comparison of observer variability and accuracy of different criteria for lung scan interpretation. Hagen PJ, Hartmann IJ, Hoekstra OS, Stokkel MP, Postmus PE, Prins MH, ANTELOPE Study Group
Unlabelled: Different criteria have been advocated for the interpretation of ventilation/perfusion (V/Q) lung scans in patients with suspected pulmonary embolism (PE). Besides these predefined criteria, many physicians use an integration of the different sets of criteria and their own experience-the so-called Gestalt interpretation. The purpose of this study was to evaluate interobserver variability and accuracy of 3 sets of criteria: the Hull and PIOPED (Prospective Investigation of Pulmonary E... Abstract

Physiological measurement, Volume 24, Issue 2, 1 1 2003, Pages 491-499 Electrical impedance tomography to measure pulmonary perfusion: is the reproducibility high enough for clinical practice? Smit HJ, Handoko ML, Vonk Noordegraaf A, Faes TJ, Postmus PE, de Vries PM, Boonstra A
A possible clinical application of electrical impedance tomography (EIT) might be to monitor changes in the pulmonary circulation, provided the reproducibility of the EIT measurement is adequate. The purpose of this study was threefold: the intra- and inter-investigator variability of repeated measurements was investigated. Three different regions of interest (ROI) were analysed to assess the optimal ROI. Twenty-four healthy subjects and six patients were included. The Sheffield applied potentia... Abstract

Circulation, Volume 107, Issue 14, 14 2 2003, Pages 1848-1851 Statins are associated with a reduced incidence of perioperative mortality in patients undergoing major noncardiac vascular surgery. Poldermans D, Bax JJ, Kertai MD, Krenning B, Westerhout CM, Schinkel AF, Thomson IR, Lansberg PJ, Fleisher LA, Klein J, van Urk H, Roelandt JR, Boersma E
Background: Patients undergoing major vascular surgery are at increased risk of perioperative mortality due to underlying coronary artery disease. Inhibitors of the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A (statins) may reduce perioperative mortality through the improvement of lipid profile, but also through the stabilization of coronary plaques on the vascular wall. Methods and results: To evaluate the association between statin use and perioperative mortality, we performed a case-controlled study... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 91, Issue 7, 1 1 2003, Pages 785-789 Impact of percutaneous coronary intervention or coronary artery bypass grafting on outcome after nonfatal cardiac arrest outside the hospital. Borger van der Burg AE, Bax JJ, Boersma E, Bootsma M, van Erven L, van der Wall EE, Schalij MJ
Survivors of cardiac arrest due to ventricular arrhythmias are at risk for recurrent events. The role of revascularization in secondary prevention for survivors of cardiac arrest has been addressed in various studies with conflicting results. A total of 142 survivors of cardiac arrest with coronary artery disease were evaluated according to a standardized protocol, including 2-dimensional echocardiography, myocardial perfusion scintigraphy, coronary angiography, and electrophysiologic testing. R... Abstract

Clinical orthopaedics and related research, Issue 409, 1 1 2003, Pages 138-150 Can finite element models detect clinically inferior cemented hip implants? Stolk J, Maher SA, Verdonschot N, Prendergast PJ, Huiskes R
Rigorous preclinical testing of cemented hip prostheses against the damage accumulation failure scenario will reduce the incidence of aseptic loosening. For that purpose, a finite element simulation is proposed that predicts damage accumulation in the cement mantle and prosthetic migration. If the simulation is to become a convincing preclinical test, it should be able to distinguish between implants in a clinically relevant way, based on accurate predictions of long-term failure mechanisms of c... Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 147, Issue 16, 1 1 2003, Pages 758-760 [From gene disease; alpha1-antitrypsine deficiency]. Hiemstra PS, Stolk J
Alpha-1-antitrypsin (alpha 1-AT) deficiency is an autosomal, recessive hereditary disorder that is associated with the development of pulmonary emphysema and liver disease. The most common mutant leading to the deficiency is the Z mutant. This results in alpha 1-AT that forms polymers which lead to accumulation in the liver and decreased secretion. Emphysema is thought to occur due to insufficient protection of the lung tissue from the proteolytic activity of neutrophil-derived elastase, as a re... Abstract

Allergy, Volume 58, Issue 4, 1 1 2003, Pages 300-305 Similar levels of nitric oxide in exhaled air in non-asthmatic rhinitis and asthma after bronchial allergen challenge. Lopuhaä CE, Koopmans JG, Jansen HM, van der Zee JS
Background: Nitric oxide in exhaled air (eNO) is elevated in allergic asthma compared with healthy subjects and has been proposed as a marker of bronchial inflammation. However, eNO is elevated to a lesser extent in allergic non-asthmatic rhinitis as well. Considering the distinctive clinical appearances of both allergic diseases, differences in eNO are expected to persist after allergen exposure. The aim of the study was to compare allergen-induced changes in eNO in house dust mite sensitized p... Abstract
