We look back at a pretty exciting year! New ideas, collaborations and equipment, and quite a few papers on their way, make that we expect even a better year for 2023.
A few highlights of 2022:
Niels Harlaar published his much anticipated paper about the conditional immortalization of human atrial cardiomyocytes in Nature Biomedical Engineering.

Arman Nobacht, MD

During his master thesis he focused on the use of optogenetics for arrhythmia termination, introducing him to the world of fundamental and translational science.
Following graduation, he returned to the lab to start his PhD training, which will focus on human cell models for atrial fibrillation and advancing the translation research on optogenetic arrhythmia termination. These projects are supported by an ERC Consolidator Grant.

Dr. S.L.M.A. (Saskia) Beeres is cardioloog en heeft als aandachtsgebied hartfalen en niet-invasieve beeldvorming. In 2007 promoveerde zij op het onderwerp "Cardiac Bone Marrow Cell Injection for Chronic Ischemic Heart Disease". In dit onderzoek toonde zij aan dat het injecteren van lichaamseigen beenmergcellen in het hart veilig is en een gunstig effect heeft op de doorbloeding van de hartspier.

Prof. dr. J.W. (Wouter) Jukema is opgeleid tot cardioloog in Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit) en Leiden (Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum (LUMC). Middelbare scholieren kunnen bij het Hart Long Centrum een maatschappelijke of beroepsoriënterende stage volgen.
Tijdens een maatschappelijke stage leveren scholieren een onbetaalde bijdrage aan de samenleving. Het doel van deze stage is scholieren kennis te laten maken met vrijwilligerswerk en ze een onbetaalde bijdrage te laten leveren aan de samenleving. Brian O. Bingen, MD, PhD

After finishing his research internship in our lab, Brian Bingen started his PhD training in 2010. He has been focusing on the underlying mechanisms of cardiac fibrillation. In 2012, he received a Dekker grant (2012T023)from the Dutch Heart Foundation, which allowed him to study the pro-arrhythmic mechanisms of cardiac hypertrophy, including means to treat cardiac arrhythmias through genetic modification.

Rupamanjari Majumder, PhD
She obtained her BSc in Physics from Presidency college, Kolkata, in her country of origin, i.e., India. After completing her Bachelor's degree, she joined the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, from where she obtained her Integrated PhD degree in Physics and Computational Biology. For her PhD thesis, she specialized in numerical studies of wave dynamics and spatiotemporal chaos in ionically and anatomically realistic mathematical models of mammalian cardiac tissue.
