JVS-vascular science, Volume 4, 23 4 2023, Pages 100101 Histological evaluation of the aortic wall response following endovascular aneurysm repair and endovascular aneurysm sealing. Bruijn LE, Heyligers JMM, Vriens PW, van Rhijn J, Roy J, Hamming JF, Gäbel G, Lindeman JHN
Objective: The Nellix endovascular aneurysm sealing (EVAS) system was developed as an alternative to conventional endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) to minimize endoleaks. A significantly higher failure rate of EVAS may be related to an interaction between the filled endobags and the AAA wall. In general, biological information on aortic remodeling after traditional EVAR is scarce. In this light, we provide here the first histologic evaluation of aneurysm wall morphology after EVAR and EVAS. Me... Abstract

Tomšič A, Palmen M, de Jong ML, Hjortnaes J, Driessen AGH, Braun J, Marsan NA, Klautz RJM
Objectives: Aortic root abscess can spread to include adjacent cardiac structures, including the central or intervalvular fibrous body and mitral valve. After radical debridement, complex surgical correction is needed. We describe the results of our mitral valve sparing approach. Methods: Between January 2004 and December 2020, 60 patients underwent operation for infective endocarditis of the aortic root with extension towards the mitral valve at 2 centers in the Netherlands. Early and late clin... Abstract
Scientific reports, Volume 13, Issue 1, 23 4 2023, Pages 4765 Embryo morphokinetics derived from fresh and vitrified bovine oocytes predict blastocyst development and nuclear abnormalities. Angel-Velez D, De Coster T, Azari-Dolatabad N, Fernández-Montoro A, Benedetti C, Pavani K, Van Soom A, Bogado Pascottini O, Smits K
Embryo development is a dynamic process and critical stages may go unnoticed with the use of traditional morphologic assessments, especially the timing of embryonic divisions and aberrant zygotic cleavage patterns. Bovine embryo development is impaired after oocyte vitrification, but little is known about the underlying morphokinetic behavior. Here, bovine zygotes from fresh (n = 708) and vitrified oocytes (n = 182) were monitored by time-lapse imaging and the timing and nature of early blastome... Abstract

Background: Dupilumab-associated ocular surface disease (DAOSD) is frequently reported as side effect in atopic dermatitis (AD) patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the frequency and severity of DAOSD, ophthalmic treatment response and to learn more about the effect of dupilumab on conjunctival goblet cells (GC). Methods: This prospective study included dupilumab-treated AD patients between February 2020 and June 2022 from the University Medical Centre Utrecht. Patients... Abstract
Journal of cardiovascular development and disease, Volume 10, Issue 3, 17 3 2023, Pages 129 Contemporary Management Strategies of Baffle Leaks in Adults with a Failing Systemic Right Ventricle Late after Atrial Switch: A Case Series and Literature Overview. Neijenhuis RML, Regeer MV, van der Kley F, Vliegen HW, Jongbloed MRM, Kiès P, Schalij MJ, Jukema JW, Egorova AD
Baffle leaks are a frequently encountered and often overlooked complication after the atrial switch procedure for transposition of the great arteries. Baffle leaks are present in up to 50% of non-selected patients, and while they initially may not cause clear symptoms, they can complicate the hemodynamic course and influence the prognosis in this complex patient group. A shunt from the pulmonary venous atrium (PVA) to the systemic venous atrium (SVA) can lead to pulmonary overflow and subpulmona... Abstract

The 3-dimensional spatial and 2-dimensional frontal QRS-T angles are measures derived from the vectorcardiogram. They are independent risk predictors for arrhythmia, but the underlying biology is unknown. Using multi-ancestry genome-wide association studies we identify 61 (58 previously unreported) loci for the spatial QRS-T angle (N = 118,780) and 11 for the frontal QRS-T angle (N = 159,715). Seven out of the 61 spatial QRS-T angle loci have not been reported for other electrocardiographic meas... Abstract
Biomedicines, Volume 11, Issue 3, 13 2 2023, Pages 867 Natriuretic Peptide Levels and Stages of Left Ventricular Dysfunction in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction. Dal Canto E, Scheffer M, Kortekaas K, Driessen-Waaijer A, Paulus WJ, van Heerebeek L
In heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), natriuretic peptide (NP) levels are frequently lower. In several trials, the outcome differed between patients with low and high NP levels. This suggests that NP could be used to identify distinct stages of left ventricular (LV) remodeling and myocardial tissue composition. This study investigated cardiac remodeling/dysfunction and myocardial tissue characteristics assessed by echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) in HFpE... Abstract
Journal of cardiovascular computed tomography, 13 2 2023, Pages S1934-5925(23)00067-9 Plaque volume, composition, and fraction versus ischemia and outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease. Kuneman JH, van den Hoogen IJ, Schultz J, Maaniitty T, van Rosendael AR, Kamperidis V, de Graaf MA, Broersen A, Jukema JW, Bax JJ, Saraste A, Knuuti J
Background: The various plaque components have been associated with ischemia and outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The main goal of this analysis was to test the hypothesis that, at patient level, the fraction of non-calcified plaque volume (PV) of total PV is associated with ischemia and outcomes in patients with CAD. This ratio could be a simple and clinically useful parameter, if predicting outcomes. Methods: Consecutive patients with suspected CAD undergoing coronary c... Abstract

Lung-function impairment underlies chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and predicts mortality. In the largest multi-ancestry genome-wide association meta-analysis of lung function to date, comprising 580,869 participants, we identified 1,020 independent association signals implicating 559 genes supported by ≥2 criteria from a systematic variant-to-gene mapping framework. These genes were enriched in 29 pathways. Individual variants showed heterogeneity across ancestries, age and smoking... Abstract
European journal of heart failure, Volume 25, Issue 4, 10 2 2023, Pages 457-468 Inotropic therapy in patients with advanced heart failure. A clinical consensus statement from the Heart Failure Association of the European Society of Cardiology. Gustafsson F, Damman K, Nalbantgil S, Van Laake LW, Tops LF, Thum T, Adamopoulos S, Bonios M, Coats AJ, Crespo-Leiro MG, Mehra MR, Filippatos G, Hill L, Metra M, Jankowska E, de Jonge N, Kaye D, Masetti M, Parissis J, Milicic D, Seferovic P, Rosano G, Ben Gal T
This clinical consensus statement reviews the use of inotropic support in patients with advanced heart failure. The current guidelines only support use of inotropes in the setting of acute decompensated heart failure with evidence of organ malperfusion or shock. However, inotropic support may be reasonable in other patients with advanced heart failure without acute severe decompensation. The clinical evidence supporting use of inotropes in these situations is reviewed. Particularly, patients wit... Abstract

Background: Alectinib is first-line therapy in patients with stage IV non-small cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC) and an anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) fusion. A shorter median progression-free survival (mPFS) was observed when alectinib minimum plasma concentrations during steady state (Cmin,SS) were below 435 ng/mL. This may suggest that patients should have an alectinib Cmin,SS ≥ 435 ng/mL for a more favorable outcome. This potential target could be attained by using therapeutic drug monitoring (... Abstract

Patient-reported outcomes regarding quality of life, AD severity, and parental work-related impairment were completed at inclusion. Data on healthcare resource utilization and me... Abstract
Cells, Volume 12, Issue 6, 7 1 2023, Pages 830 Human β-Defensins in Diagnosis of Head and Neck Cancers. Kompuinen J, Keskin M, Yilmaz D, Gürsoy M, Gürsoy UK
Head and neck cancers are malignant growths with high death rates, which makes the early diagnosis of the affected patients of utmost importance. Over 90% of oral cavity cancers come from squamous cells, and the tongue, oral cavity, and salivary glands are the most common locations for oral squamous cell carcinoma lesions. Human β-defensins (hBDs), which are mainly produced by epithelial cells, are cationic peptides with a wide antimicrobial spectrum. In addition to their role in antimicrobial d... Abstract
EBioMedicine, Volume 90, 6 1 2023, Pages 104506 Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ɣ agonist mediated inhibition of heparanase expression reduces proteinuria. Garsen M, Buijsers B, Sol M, Gockeln L, Sonneveld R, van Kuppevelt TH, de Graaf M, van den Born J, Kamps JAAM, van Raalte DH, van der Meer RW, Lamb HJ, Hillebrands JL, Rabelink TJ, Maciej-Hulme ML, Krenning G, Nijenhuis T, van der Vlag J
Background: Proteinuria is associated with many glomerular diseases and a risk factor for the progression to renal failure. We previously showed that heparanase (HPSE) is essential for the development of proteinuria, whereas peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor ɣ (PPARɣ) agonists can ameliorate proteinuria. Since a recent study showed that PPARɣ regulates HPSE expression in liver cancer cells, we hypothesized that PPARɣ agonists exert their reno-protective effect by inhibiting glomerular H... Abstract
