Besides his pre-clinical research on experimental AF models, Niels Harlaar also focuses on the clinical aspects of this rhythm disorder. Under supervision of Thomas van Brakel (cardiothoracic surgeon and principal investigator), Niels has investigated so-called clamping vs non-clamping devices in thoracoscopic box ablation in AF.

Een aortaklepinsufficiëntie is een lekkage van de hartklep. De klep tussen de linkerhartkamer en de aorta (de lichaamsslagader) sluit dan niet goed. Daardoor stroomt een deel van het bloed weer terug de hartkamer in en moet de hartspier meer kracht zetten om dezelfde hoeveelheid bloed rond te pompen in het lichaam.

Emile Nyns wins Young Investigator Award at great ESC 2019 meeting
Emile has won the first prize in the Young Investigator Award competition for the Basic Science category during ESC 2019 in Paris. He presented his latest results on hybrid bioelectronic -shockless- AF termination. Congratulations!

Een bypassoperatie of een CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting) wordt uitgevoerd wanneer u een vernauwing in een van de kransslagaders (coronairen) heeft. Markus Horsthemke joined our team in November 2020 as a guest researcher to study the role of class XVIII myosins in sarcomerogenesis. He obtained his PhD at the Institute of Molecular Cell Biology (University of Münster, Germany), where he investigated the role of Myosin 18A in macrophage migration and phagocytosis, as well as its role in embryonic cardiac development.
