PloS one, Volume 8, Issue 7, 29 5 2013, Pages e69796 Connectivity between migrating and landlocked populations of a diadromous fish species investigated using otolith microchemistry. Tulp I, Keller M, Navez J, Winter HV, de Graaf M, Baeyens W
Smelt Osmerus eperlanus has two different life history strategies in The Netherlands. The migrating population inhabits the Wadden Sea and spawns in freshwater areas. After the closure of the Afsluitdijk in 1932, part of the smelt population became landlocked. The fresh water smelt population has been in severe decline since 1990, and has strongly negatively impacted the numbers of piscivorous water birds relying on smelt as their main prey. The lakes that were formed after the dike closure, IJs... Abstract

Trilling M, Bellora N, Rutkowski AJ, de Graaf M, Dickinson P, Robertson K, Prazeres da Costa O, Ghazal P, Friedel CC, Albà MM, Dölken L
Interferons (IFN) play a pivotal role in innate immunity, orchestrating a cell-intrinsic anti-pathogenic state and stimulating adaptive immune responses. The complex interplay between the primary response to IFNs and its modulation by positive and negative feedback loops is incompletely understood. Here, we implement the combination of high-resolution gene-expression profiling of nascent RNA with translational inhibition of secondary feedback by cycloheximide. Unexpectedly, this approach reveale... Abstract

A method is introduced to derive integral properties of the aerosol size distribution, e.g., aerosol mass, from tropospheric multiwavelength Raman lidar aerosol extinction and backscatter data, using an adapted form of the principal component analysis (PCA) technique. Since the refractive index of general tropospheric aerosols is variable and aerosol types can vary within one profile, an inversion technique applied in the troposphere should account for varying aerosol refractive indices. Using P... Abstract

PloS one, Volume 8, Issue 3, 6 1 2013, Pages e58572 Small hydrophobic protein of human metapneumovirus does not affect virus replication and host gene expression in vitro. de Graaf M, Herfst S, Aarbiou J, Burgers PC, Zaaraoui-Boutahar F, Bijl M, van Ijcken W, Schrauwen EJ, Osterhaus AD, Luider TM, Scholte BJ, Fouchier RA, Andeweg AC
Human metapneumovirus (HMPV) encodes a small hydrophobic (SH) protein of unknown function. HMPV from which the SH open reading frame was deleted (HMPVΔSH) was viable and displayed similar replication kinetics, cytopathic effect and plaque size compared with wild type HMPV in several cell-lines. In addition, no differences were observed in infection efficiency or cell-to-cell spreading in human primary bronchial epithelial cells (HPBEC) cultured at an air-liquid interphase. Host gene expression w... Abstract

Plaque constitution on computed tomography coronary angiography (CTA) is associated with prognosis. At present only visual assessment of plaque constitution is possible. An accurate automatic, quantitative approach for CTA plaque constitution assessment would improve reproducibility and allows higher accuracy. The present study assessed the feasibility of a fully automatic and quantitative analysis of atherosclerosis on CTA. Clinically derived CTA and intravascular ultrasound virtual histology (... Netherlands heart journal : monthly journal of the Netherlands Society of Cardiology and the Netherlands Heart Foundation, Volume 21, Issue 1, 1 1 2013, Pages 6-13 Myocardial bridging: what have we learned in the past and will new diagnostic modalities provide new insights? Bruschke AV, Veltman CE, de Graaf MA, Vliegen HW
The clinical significance of myocardial bridging has been a subject of discussion and controversy since the introduction of coronary arteriography (CAG) in the early 1960s. More recently computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) has made it possible to visualise the overlying muscular bands and appears to have a higher sensitivity for detecting myocardial bridging than CAG. Combining CTCA with invasive techniques such as CAG should make it possible to improve our understanding of the patho... Abstract

During viral infections cellular gene expression is subject to rapid alterations induced by both viral and antiviral mechanisms. In this study, we applied metabolic labeling of newly transcribed RNA with 4-thiouridine (4sU-tagging) to dissect the real-time kinetics of cellular and viral transcriptional activity during lytic murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection. Microarray profiling on newly transcribed RNA obtained at different times during the first six hours of MCMV infection revealed discr... Abstract

Journal of fish biology, Volume 81, Issue 2, 1 1 2012, Pages 750-765 Spawning migrations of the endemic Labeobarbus (Cyprinidae, Teleostei) species of Lake Tana, Ethiopia: status and threats. Anteneh W, Getahun A, Dejen E, Sibbing FA, Nagelkerke LA, De Graaf M, Wudneh T, Vijverberg J, Palstra AP
The reproductive biology of the only known intact species flock of large cyprinids, the 16 Labeobarbus species of Lake Tana (Ethiopia), has been extensively studied for the past two decades. Seven species of Labeobarbus are known to migrate >50 km upstream into tributary rivers for spawning during the rainy season (July to October), whereas eight other species are absent from these rivers and probably developed a new strategy of lacustrine spawning (macro-spatial segregation). One species (L.... Abstract

The Journal of general virology, Volume 93, Issue Pt 9, 20 3 2012, Pages 1996-2007 Genetic evolution of the neuraminidase of influenza A (H3N2) viruses from 1968 to 2009 and its correspondence to haemagglutinin evolution. Westgeest KB, de Graaf M, Fourment M, Bestebroer TM, van Beek R, Spronken MIJ, de Jong JC, Rimmelzwaan GF, Russell CA, Osterhaus ADME, Smith GJD, Smith DJ, Fouchier RAM
Each year, influenza viruses cause epidemics by evading pre-existing humoral immunity through mutations in the major glycoproteins: the haemagglutinin (HA) and the neuraminidase (NA). In 2004, the antigenic evolution of HA of human influenza A (H3N2) viruses was mapped (Smith et al., Science 305, 371-376, 2004) from its introduction in humans in 1968 until 2003. The current study focused on the genetic evolution of NA and compared it with HA using the dataset of Smith and colleagues, updated to... Abstract

Vaccine, Volume 30, Issue 29, 1 1 2012, Pages 4369-4376 A review of influenza haemagglutinin receptor binding as it relates to pandemic properties. Wilks S, de Graaf M, Smith DJ, Burke DF
Haemagglutinin is a determinant of many viral properties, and successful adaptation to a human-like form is thought to be an important step toward pandemic influenza emergence. The availability of structurally distinct sialic acid linked receptors in the sites of human and avian influenza infection are generally held to account for the differences observed, but the relevance of other selection pressures has not been elucidated. There is evidence for genetic and structural constraints of haemaggl... Abstract

The Journal of infectious diseases, Volume 205, Issue 10, 28 4 2012, Pages 1539-1543 Latent acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus type 1 in trigeminal ganglia of immunocompetent individuals. van Velzen M, van Loenen FB, Meesters RJ, de Graaf M, Remeijer L, Luider TM, Osterhaus AD, Verjans GM
Specific mutations within the hypervariable herpes simplex virus (HSV) gene thymidine kinase (TK) gene lead to acyclovir (ACV) resistance. To uncover the existence of latent ACV-resistant (ACV(R)) HSV-1, we determined the genetic and functional variability of the HSV-1 TK gene pool in paired trigeminal ganglia (TG) of 5 immunocompetent individuals. The latent virus pool consisted of a donor-specific HSV-1 quasispecies, including one major ACV-sensitive (ACV(S)) and multiple phylogenetic-related... Abstract

Heart and vessels, Volume 28, Issue 2, 18 3 2012, Pages 166-172 The maximum necrotic core area is most often located proximally to the site of most severe narrowing: a virtual histology intravascular ultrasound study. de Graaf MA, van Velzen JE, de Graaf FR, Schuijf JD, Dijkstra J, Bax JJ, Reiber JH, Schalij MJ, van der Wall EE, Jukema JW
Previous angiographic studies have shown that almost two-thirds of vulnerable plaques are located in non-obstructive lesions. Possibly, the maximum necrotic core (Max NC) area is not always identical to the site of most severe stenosis. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential difference in location between the maximum necrotic core area and the site of most severe narrowing as assessed by virtual histology intravascular ultrasound (VH IVUS). Overall, 77 patients (139 v... Abstract

The international journal of cardiovascular imaging, Volume 28, Issue 8, 24 4 2012, Pages 2065-2071 Non-invasive assessment of atherosclerotic coronary lesion length using multidetector computed tomography angiography: comparison to quantitative coronary angiography. van Velzen JE, de Graaf MA, Ciarka A, de Graaf FR, Schalij MJ, Kroft LJ, de Roos A, Jukema JW, Reiber JH, Schuijf JD, Bax JJ, van der Wall EE
Multidetector computed tomography angiography (CTA) provides information on plaque extent and stenosis in the coronary wall. More accurate lesion assessment may be feasible with CTA as compared to invasive coronary angiography (ICA). Accordingly, lesion length assessment was compared between ICA and CTA in patients referred for CTA who underwent subsequent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). 89 patients clinically referred for CTA were subsequently referred for ICA and PCI. On CTA, lesion... Abstract

Repeated transmission of animal influenza viruses to humans has prompted investigation of the viral, host, and environmental factors responsible for transmission via aerosols or respiratory droplets. How do we determine-out of thousands of influenza virus isolates collected in animal surveillance studies each year-which viruses have the potential to become 'airborne', and hence pose a pandemic threat? Here, using knowledge from pandemic, zoonotic and epidemic viruses, we postulate that... Abstract
