Journal of nuclear cardiology : official publication of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, Volume 13, Issue 1, 1 1 2006, Pages 11-18 Screening of asymptomatic patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus for silent coronary artery disease: combined use of stress myocardial perfusion imaging and coronary calcium scoring. Scholte AJ, Bax JJ, Wackers FJ
Diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease constitute an ominous clinical combination. Rates of morbidity and mortality as a result of cardiovascular complications are high in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Screening for silent coronary artery disease, to detect the disease in an early stage and to be able to initiate early appropriate treatment, has recently become an important focus of clinical investigation. Recent prospective studies have shown that the overall prevalence of sile... Abstract

European journal of echocardiography : the journal of the Working Group on Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology, Volume 6, Issue 5, 2 1 2005, Pages 388-391 Contrast echocardiography as a useful additional diagnostic tool in evaluating a primary cardiac tumor. Haverkamp MC, Scholte AJ, Holman ER, Jongbloed MR, Schippers EF, de Roos A, van der Wall EE, Poldermans D, Bax JJ, Schalij MJ
The current report describes a case of a primary cardiac lymphoma. For early and appropriate treatment of a cardiac mass it is not only important to determine its localization and extension but also to differentiate between malignant and benign lesions. This report demonstrates that not only transthoracic echocardiography but also the other different forms of echocardiography such as transesophageal echocardiography, as well as contrast and intracardiac echocardiography, are useful tools in the... European journal of echocardiography : the journal of the Working Group on Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology, Volume 7, Issue 1, 2 1 2005, Pages 62-66 Intracardiac pseudotumor caused by mitral annular calcification. de Vrey EA, Scholte AJ, Krauss XH, Dion RA, Poldermans D, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
The current report describes a rare case of a pseudotumor in the left ventricle. Transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography demonstrated a round, echodense, mobile mass attached to the posterior mitral leaflet and annulus. At surgical exploration caseous annular calcification of the posterior mitral leaflet was diagnosed. After resection of the mass, successful mitral valvular plasty was performed. Review of the literature indicated that mitral annular calcification is associated with an... Abstract

European journal of echocardiography : the journal of the Working Group on Echocardiography of the European Society of Cardiology, Volume 6, Issue 4, 20 3 2004, Pages 297-300 Underestimation of severity of mitral regurgitation with varying hemodynamics. Scholte AJ, Holman ER, Haverkamp MC, Poldermans D, van der Wall EE, Dion RA, Bax JJ
Transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is a valuable technique to assess mitral valve anatomy and the mechanism of mitral regurgitation (MR). We present the case of a 35-year-old woman with severe MR due to restrictive motion of the posterior mitral leaflet, who was referred for mitral annuloplasty. Under physiologic circumstances, a severe (grade 3+) MR was present, whereas in the operating room during general anesthesia, the MR had disappeared almost completely. The downgrading of MR due to ge... Abstract

Echocardiography (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), Volume 21, Issue 8, 1 1 2004, Pages 721-723 Transesophageal echocardiography-guided transvenous biopsy of an intracardiac tumor. Scholte AJ, Frissen PH, van der Wouw PA
Transesophageal echocardiography with simultaneous fluoroscopic guidance during a transvenous biopsy of an intracardiac tumor is a valuable technique. We present the case of a 67-year-old man with a metastasis in the right atrium from which histological examination of the tumor was indicated. The inaccessible location of the primary tumor in the liver and impaired hemostasis due to cirrhosis necessitated a transvenous biopsy of the metastasis. The procedure and the associated techniques are disc... Abstract

Scholte AJ, Agema WR, Poldermans D, Somer ST, Holman ER, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Two-dimensional echocardiography is a valuable tool in visualizing and monitoring aortic valve and root abnormalities. We present a rare case of a patient with massive aortic regurgitation due to cusp aneurysm, which was accurately diagnosed by echocardiography and treated by valve replacement. A complicated course with recurrent aneurysms of the aortic wall after aortic valve replacement was remarkable in this case. Although different possible etiologies could not be determined, endocarditis an... Abstract
