A 60-year-old woman presented with repolarization disorders on the electrocardiogram after a generalized seizure, which immediately disappeared after vomiting up a 20-eurocent coin. We did not find any evidence of coronary artery disease. Multislice computed tomography demonstrated no coronary atherosclerotic stenosis but a close relationship of the esophagus with the coronary arteries. This relation was further studied in detail in a human cadaver. From our findings, it is most likely that the... Abstract

Nucifora G, Schuijf JD, Delgado V, Bertini M, Scholte AJ, Ng AC, van Werkhoven JM, Jukema JW, Holman ER, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Background: Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and subclinical systolic dysfunction may be markers of coronary artery disease (CAD). However, whether these markers are useful for prediction of obstructive CAD is unknown. Methods: A total of 182 consecutive outpatients (54 +/- 10 years, 59% males) without known CAD and overt LV systolic dysfunction underwent 64-slice multislice computed tomography (MSCT) coronary angiography and echocardiography. The MSCT angiograms showing atheroscleros... Abstract

Coronary artery disease, Volume 20, Issue 7, 1 1 2009, Pages 462-466 Value of contrast echocardiography for left ventricular thrombus detection postinfarction and impact on antithrombotic therapy. Siebelink HM, Scholte AJ, Van de Veire NR, Holman ER, Nucifora G, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Introduction: Conventional echocardiography is often inconclusive for the presence or the absence of left ventricular (LV) thrombus. Contrast echocardiography could have additional diagnostic and therapeutic significance. This analysis investigated the value of contrast echocardiography for LV thrombus detection in patients postinfarction and the impact on choice of antithrombotic therapy. Methods: From a cohort of 991 patients undergoing routine echocardiography postinfarction, 156 patients who... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 104, Issue 8, 1 1 2009, Pages 1041-1046 Usefulness of carotid intima-media thickness in patients with diabetes mellitus as a predictor of coronary artery disease. Djaberi R, Schuijf JD, de Koning EJ, Rabelink TJ, Smit JW, Kroft LJ, Pereira AM, Scholte AJ, Spaans M, Romijn JA, de Roos A, van der Wall EE, Jukema JW, Bax JJ
Identification of asymptomatic patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) at increased risk for coronary artery disease (CAD) remains a challenge. Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) has been proposed as a surrogate marker for CAD but only limited data are available. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the potential of CIMT for prediction of CAD in asymptomatic patients with DM. Prospectively, CIMT of the left and right common carotid arteries was assessed by B-mode ultrasound in 150 asymptomat... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 104, Issue 6, 21 3 2009, Pages 758-763 Relation between Framingham risk categories and the presence of functionally relevant coronary lesions as determined on multislice computed tomography and stress testing. Nucifora G, Schuijf JD, van Werkhoven JM, Djaberi R, van der Wall EE, de Roos A, Scholte AJ, Schalij MJ, Jukema JW, Bax JJ
Noninvasive assessment of subclinical atherosclerosis by multislice computed tomographic (MSCT) coronary angiography and demonstration of significant, flow-limiting coronary artery disease (CAD) by stress testing may improve patients' risk stratification. However, data relating the complementary information provided by these noninvasive techniques to traditional risk assessment are scarce. In 255 subjects (45% women, mean age 54 +/- 12 years) without known CAD, 64-slice MSCT coronary angiog... Abstract

American heart journal, Volume 157, Issue 5, 25 4 2009, Pages 882.e1-8 Real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography early after acute myocardial infarction: incremental value of echo-contrast for assessment of left ventricular function. Nucifora G, Marsan NA, Holman ER, Siebelink HM, van Werkhoven JM, Scholte AJ, van der Wall EE, Schalij MJ, Bax JJ
Background: Accurate and reproducible assessment of left ventricular (LV) systolic function is important in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Real-time 3-dimensional echocardiography (RT3DE) is an accurate technique, but it relies heavily on good image quality. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the incremental value of contrast-enhanced RT3DE. Methods: A total of 140 consecutive patients (58 +/- 11 years, 78% men) with ST-elevation AMI clinically underwent nonenhanced a... Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to assess whether adenosine impairs left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) obtained with gated SPECT in patients with a normal myocardial perfusion scintigram. Materials and methods: This prospective study included 160 consecutive patients with a normal myocardial perfusion scintigraphy (MPS), who were stressed with either exercise (n = 64) or with adenosine (n = 96). Student t-test or chi test was used to compare patient's characteristics and functi... Abstract
Clinical nuclear medicine, Volume 32, Issue 12, 1 1 2007, Pages 927-929 Intermittent ST-segment depressions during adenosine stress test. van der Hiel B, Scholte AJ, Stokkel MP
ST-segment depression during adenosine stress testing is usually a 1-time event during or after the test and is often related to ischemia due to severe 3-vessel disease. In this case report we describe a patient with severe 3-vessel disease who had intermittent ST-segment depression on the electrocardiogram during a myocardial perfusion stress test with adenosine. These intermittent ST depressions could be explained by possible adenosine-induced coronary spasm. Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 101, Issue 1, 26 4 2007, Pages 40-45 Anatomic correlates of a normal perfusion scan using 64-slice computed tomographic coronary angiography. van Werkhoven JM, Schuijf JD, Jukema JW, Kroft LJ, Stokkel MP, Dibbets-Schneider P, Pundziute G, Scholte AJ, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Both myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) and multislice computed tomography (MSCT) are currently used to detect coronary artery disease (CAD). However, MSCT permits early detection of atherosclerosis while myocardial perfusion is still normal. In addition, MPI results can be normal despite the presence of high-risk CAD (left main and balanced 3-vessel CAD). In this study, the range of anatomic findings using MSCT in patients with normal MPI results was evaluated. In 180 patients presenting with c... Abstract

Objective: Cardiovascular events are high in patients with type 2 diabetes, whereas their risk stratification is more difficult. The higher risk may be related to differences in coronary plaque burden and composition. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether differences in the extent and composition of coronary plaques in patients with and without diabetes can be observed using multislice computed tomography (MSCT). Research design and methods: MSCT was performed in 215 patients (86 [40... Abstract
