Karagiannis SE, Feringa HH, Elhendy A, van Domburg R, Chonchol M, Vidakovic R, Bax JJ, Karatasakis G, Athanasopoulos G, Cokkinos DV, Poldermans D
Background: Dobutamine stress echocardiography (DSE) is used for risk stratification of patients with suspected coronary artery disease (CAD). However, the prognostic value of DSE among the entire strata of renal function has yet to be determined. We assessed the prognostic value of renal function relative to DSE findings. Methods: We studied 2292 patients, divided into 729 (32%) patients with normal renal function [creatinine clearance (CrCl) >90 ml/min] and 1563 (68%) with renal dysfunction... Abstract

Annals of vascular surgery, Volume 21, Issue 6, 1 1 2007, Pages 780-789 Glycemic control, lipid-lowering treatment, and prognosis in diabetic patients with peripheral atherosclerotic disease. Feringa HH, Karagiannis SE, Vidakovic R, Elhendy A, Schouten O, Boersma E, Bax JJ, Poldermans D
Glycemic control may be an underestimated risk factor in diabetic patients with peripheral arterial disease (PAD). Chronic statin therapy may improve glycemic control and outcome in these patients. In an observational cohort study of 425 consecutive diabetic patients with PAD, chronic statin therapy was noted, the ankle-brachial index was measured, and serial glycemic hemoglobin (HbA(1c)) measurements were obtained. During follow-up (median 7 years), all-cause mortality and cardiac death occurre... Abstract

Heart (British Cardiac Society), Volume 93, Issue 11, 1 1 2007, Pages 1461-1470 Multi-modality imaging to assess left atrial size, anatomy and function. Tops LF, van der Wall EE, Schalij MJ, Bax JJ
The left atrium (LA) anterior-posterior diameter was one of the first standardised echocardiographic parameters. However, the clinical importance of LA size assessment has been neglected for some time. Recent population-based studies have demonstrated the prognostic value of LA size for long-term outcome. Furthermore, with new dedicated techniques such as tissue Doppler imaging, it has become feasible to assess (regional) LA function. In addition, the introduction of catheter ablation procedures... Heart (British Cardiac Society), Volume 93, Issue 11, 1 1 2007, Pages 1339-1350 Optimal use of echocardiography in cardiac resynchronisation therapy. Bleeker GB, Yu CM, Nihoyannopoulos P, de Sutter J, Van de Veire N, Holman ER, Schalij MJ, van der Wall EE, Bax JJ
Echocardiography has several roles in patients with cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT). First, it can optimise selection of CRT candidates by demonstration of left ventricular (LV) dyssynchrony. Second, it can be used to assess immediate response to CRT, including detection of acute LV resynchronisation. Echocardiography is also useful to evaluate long-term benefit from CRT. Finally, echocardiography is important in optimisation of pacemaker settings, including AV and VV optimisation. Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 100, Issue 12, 26 4 2007, Pages 1786-1791 Comparison with computed tomography of two ultrasound devices for diagnosis of abdominal aortic aneurysm. Vidakovic R, Feringa HH, Kuiper RJ, Karagiannis SE, Schouten O, Dunkelgrun M, Hoeks SE, Bom N, Bax JJ, Neskovic AN, Poldermans D
Screening for abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in patients at risk will become more cost effective if a simple, inexpensive, and reliable ultrasound device is available. The aim of this study was to compare a 2-dimensional, handheld ultrasound device and a newly developed ultrasound volume scanner (based on bladder scan technology) with computed tomography (CT) for diagnosing AAA. A total of 146 patients (mean age 69 +/- 10 years; 127 men) were screened for the presence of AAAs (diameter >3... Abstract

The American journal of cardiology, Volume 100, Issue 11, 24 4 2007, Pages 1665-1670 Usefulness of QRS duration to predict response to cardiac resynchronization therapy in patients with end-stage heart failure. Mollema SA, Bleeker GB, van der Wall EE, Schalij MJ, Bax JJ
Despite current selection criteria, 20% to 30% of patients treated with cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) do not benefit. It has been suggested that QRS duration may not be the optimal criterion to select patients for CRT. The objective of this study was to systematically evaluate the predictive value of QRS duration for response to CRT in a large group of consecutive patients. A total of 242 patients with heart failure scheduled for implantation of a CRT device were studied. Selection cri... Abstract

Coronary artery disease (CAD) accounts for a large fraction of the morbidity, mortality, and cost of diabetes. Recognizing this, nearly 10 years ago the American Diabetes Association published a consensus recommendation that clinicians consider a risk factor-guided screening approach to early diagnosis of CAD in both symptomatic and asymptomatic patients. Subsequent clinical trial results have not supported those recommendations. Since the prior consensus statement, newer imaging methods, such a... Abstract
