Wat is mitralisklepstenose?Een mitralisklepstenose is een vernauwing van de hartklep tussen de linkerboezem en de linkerkamer van het hart (de mitralisklep, nr. 7 in onderstaande tekening).
Wat zijn de symptomen?Als er sprake is van mitralisklepstenose kunt u klachten krijgen van kortademigheid bij inspanning, kortademigheid bij platliggen, frequent ’s nachts plassen, vocht vasthouden (oedemen), hartkloppingen en hartritmestoornissen.

(Meindert) Palmen is cardiothoracaal chirurg en heeft als aandachtsgebied de reconstructieve mitralisklepchirurgie, implantatie van Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD of steunhart) en Transcatheter Hartklep Interventies (TAVI). In Februari 2003 promoveerde hij op het onderwerp "Growth Factors in Myocardial Ischemia", een basaal wetenschappelijk proefschrift dat het beschermende effect van een tweetal groeifactoren tijdens zuurstofgebrek van het hart beschrijft.

Presenting our work at the II Arrhythmology Forum in St Petersburg
We have visited the II St. Petersburg Arrythmology Forum in Russia. Twan showed our work on reversible immortalization of cardiomyocytes, while Niels presented the data regarding the use of excised human atrial tissue for mechanistic studies into arrhythmogenesis. Finally, Daniel presented several ongoing studies on the use of optogenetics to study and treat cardiac arrhythmias. Boezemfibrilleren of atriumfibrilleren is een hartritmestoornis die zich vaak kenmerkt door een snelle en onregelmatige hartslag. Het is een veelvoorkomende ritmestoornis: één op de vier mensen boven de 55 jaar krijgt ermee te maken. Hoewel de ritmestoornis niet levensbedreigend is, is behandelen noodzakelijk om schade aan het hart te voorkomen.
