Seminars in radiation oncology, Volume 5, Issue 1, 1 1 1995, Pages 69-73 Brain Metastases From Small Cell Lung Cancer: Chemotherapy, Radiotherapy, or Both? Postmus PE
Brain metastasis is one of the most troublesome forms of metastatic disease in small cell lung cancer and is seen in more than half of the patients during the course of their disease. Treatment is very often indicated to improve the usually dramatic symptoms. Whole brain radiotherapy is effective with regard to improvement of clinical symptoms in the majority of the patients. Evaluation with currently used standard response criteria if it is used as a single treatment modality has unfortunately... Abstract

Respiration; international review of thoracic diseases, Volume 62, Issue 3, 1 1 1995, Pages 148-150 Stent placement is justifiable in end-stage patients with malignant airway tumours. Sutedja G, Schramel F, van Kralingen K, Postmus PE
Extraluminal tumour compression can be treated with the use of stenting. In 8 patients with end-stage malignant tumours of the tracheobronchial tree, tumor compression of the major airways became apparent after Nd-YAG laser debulking. Dumon-type stents (Endoxane), were inserted under general anaesthesia. There were no complications during and after stent insertion. All stents were well tolerated, with significant symptomatic relief in all patients. This symptomatic relief was considered worthwhi... Abstract

The Journal of asthma : official journal of the Association for the Care of Asthma, Volume 32, Issue 1, 1 1 1995, Pages 69-74 Subjective sleep quality and mental fitness in asthmatic patients. van Keimpema AR, Ariaansz M, Nauta JJ, Postmus PE
Asthmatic patients from our outpatient pulmonary clinic were asked to fill out a questionnaire about their sleep and daytime fitness. Seventy-eight responded. Sixty-five healthy persons served as a control group. Patients reported decreased sleep quality, decreased daytime mental fitness, and increased daytime somnolence. There was no relation between these features and lung function, bronchial hyperreactivity, or nocturnal asthma. We conclude that these asthmatic patients reported more sleep di... Abstract

Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, Volume 2, Issue 2, 1 1 1995, Pages 89-92 Video-Assisted Thoracoscopy is Superior to Standard Computer Tomography of the Thorax for Selection of Patients With Spontaneous Pneumothorax for Bullectomy. Janssen JP, Golding RP, Cuesta MA, Sutedja T, Postmus PE
Background: Spontaneous pneumothorax (SP) is a common disease of unknown cause often attributed to rupture of a subpleural bulla or bleb [in this study described as emphysema-like changes (ELC)]. Treatment of SP varies from conservative (rest) to aggressive (surgery). Patients with bullae >2 cm diameter, found either by chest roentgenogram or during thoracoscopy, are often treated surgically (bullectomy and pleurectomy, or abrasion). Thoracoscopy is frequently used as the method of choice to... Abstract

Diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, Volume 1, Issue 4, 1 1 1995, Pages 227-228 Severe bronchomalacia in a 65-year-old man treated with stent insertion instead of surgical bronchoplasty. Sutedja TG, de Graaf JC, Schramel FM, Van Kralingen KW, Postmus PE
Bronchomalacia in adults is rare. A case is reported here of a 65-year-old man with severe cough and mucostasis, caused by a benign bronchomalacia of the ventral wall of the left main bronchus. This was treated successfully with the insertion of a silicone Dumon stent as an alternative to surgical bronchoplasty. Abstract

Thorax, Volume 49, Issue 12, 1 1 1994, Pages 1243-1246 Fibreoptic bronchoscopic electrosurgery under local anaesthesia for rapid palliation in patients with central airway malignancies: a preliminary report. Sutedja G, van Kralingen K, Schramel FM, Postmus PE
Background: Obstruction of a major airway by tumour causes serious morbidity. There is still scope for a widely applicable, simple and effective treatment to provide rapid palliation. Methods: A fibreoptic bronchoscope prototype with an insulated inner sheath was used under local anaesthesia in 17 patients with locally advanced tracheobronchial malignancies. An insulated flexible electro-surgery probe was used to coagulate intraluminal tumour mass using standard electrosurgery equipment. Results... Abstract

Laboratory investigation; a journal of technical methods and pathology, Volume 71, Issue 1, 1 1 1994, Pages 61-66 Quantitation of DNA topoisomerase II alpha messenger ribonucleic acid levels in a small cell lung cancer cell line and two drug resistant sublines using a polymerase chain reaction-aided transcript titration assay. Withoff S, Smit EF, Meersma GJ, van den Berg A, Timmer-Bosscha H, Kok K, Postmus PE, Mulder NH, de Vries EG, Buys CH
Background: We have modified a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-aided transcript titration assay (1) in order to allow quantitation of low amounts of DNA topoisomerase II alpha mRNA in small RNA samples. Experimental design: The titration assay was used to quantitate the amount of DNA topoisomerase II alpha mRNA in a human small cell lung carcinoma cell line, GLC4 and its drug-resistant sublines, GLC4/ADR and GLC4/CDDP. These cell lines show differences in DNA topoisomerase II alpha protein level... Abstract

The European respiratory journal, Volume 7, Issue 7, 1 1 1994, Pages 1281-1284 Treatment of patients with spontaneous pneumothorax during videothoracoscopy. Janssen JP, van Mourik J, Cuesta Valentin M, Sutedja G, Gigengack K, Postmus PE
Thoracoscopy for spontaneous pneumothorax has been performed over the years by many pulmonologists. The aim of the procedure was merely diagnostic: the detection of blebs and bullae. Therapeutic modalities were restricted to chemical pleurodesis. The development of videothoracoscopy has made more complex interventions, such as bullectomy possible. A protocol for videothoracoscopic treatment of spontaneous pneumothorax, with all treatment modalities in one session, has been developed. All patient... Abstract

Lung cancer (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Volume 11, Issue 1-2, 1 1 1994, Pages 1-17 Bronchoscopic treatment of lung tumors. Sutedja G, Postmus PE
Several bronchoscopic techniques for the treatment of patients with tracheobronchial pathology have become available during the last decade. Technical development and additional instruments have provided the bronchoscopist with several alternatives for bronchoscopic therapeutic interventions. The majority of patients with malignant tracheobronchial neoplasm have a dismal prognosis. Palliation is the main aim of the treatment. However, in patients with an early-stage tumor, bronchoscopic treatmen... Abstract

Respiration; international review of thoracic diseases, Volume 61, Issue 3, 1 1 1994, Pages 167-168 High-dose rate brachytherapy has a curative potential in patients with intraluminal squamous cell lung cancer. Sutedja G, Baris G, van Zandwijk N, Postmus PE
Two patients presented with intraluminal T1N0 squamous cell lung cancer. Poor lung function precluded surgical resection and/or external radiotherapy. They were treated up to 3 times with high-dose rate brachytherapy (10 Gy at 1 cm each session) with curative intent. Follow-up has been 54 and 25 months. Brachytherapy is an effective and well-tolerated bronchoscopic treatment alternative with a curative potential in patients with small T1N0 intraluminal lung cancer. Abstract
