Chest, Volume 132, Issue 6, 7 1 2007, Pages 1906-1912 Noninvasively assessed pulmonary artery stiffness predicts mortality in pulmonary arterial hypertension. Gan CT, Lankhaar JW, Westerhof N, Marcus JT, Becker A, Twisk JW, Boonstra A, Postmus PE, Vonk-Noordegraaf A
Aims: Decreased total compliance of the pulmonary vascular bed is associated with increased mortality in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). We investigated whether proximal pulmonary artery stiffness, in terms of area distensibility and noninvasively assessed relative area change (RAC), calculated as relative cross-sectional area change, predicts mortality in patients with PAH. Methods and results: Eighty-six subjects underwent right-heart catheterization and MRI to assess area... Abstract

Lung cancer (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Volume 60, Issue 1, 5 1 2007, Pages 57-61 CT detected indeterminate pulmonary nodules in a chemoprevention trial of fluticasone. van den Berg RM, Teertstra HJ, van Zandwijk N, van Tinteren H, Visser C, Pasic A, Sutedja TG, Baas P, Golding RP, Postmus PE, Smit EF
Introduction: In animal models of lung carcinogenesis, inhaled corticosteroids appear to reduce the number of new lung tumors. In a trial of budesonide in smokers with bronchial dysplasia, the proportion of indeterminate CT detected pulmonary nodules that resolved was larger in the treatment group. We performed a secondary analysis of CT data of subjects at risk of lung cancer enrolled in a chemoprevention trial of fluticasone. Methods: Subjects with bronchial squamous metaplasia or dysplasia ha... Abstract
Nederlands tijdschrift voor geneeskunde, Volume 151, Issue 45, 1 1 2007, Pages 2491-2493 [Prevention of postoperative pulmonary complications by preoperative training]. van 't Hul AJ, Postmus PE
Postoperative pulmonary complications are the main cause of morbidity and mortality after surgery. A likely explanation is dysfunction of the respiratory muscles, in particular the diaphragm, which results in rapid, shallow breathing and ultimately-in closing of the airways, atelectasis and hypoxaemia. Breathing exercises in the perioperative period, despite a good rationale, were in general not found to be effective. A promising new approach is specific training of inspiratory muscles. A random... Brokx HA, Visser O, Postmus PE, Paul MA
Introduction: With the increasing life span in the Western world, the number of octogenarians with resectable, localized non-small cell lung cancer is increasing. Previous reports on the outcome of surgery for lung cancer in octogenarians were mainly derived from single institutions. In contrast, this study presents results for all hospitals in a region of 3 million inhabitants. Methods: General data on all patients diagnosed with lung cancer in the period 1989 to 2004 were retrieved from the Am... Abstract

Respiration; international review of thoracic diseases, Volume 76, Issue 2, 25 4 2007, Pages 160-167 Cardiopulmonary exercise test characteristics in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and associated pulmonary hypertension. Holverda S, Bogaard HJ, Groepenhoff H, Postmus PE, Boonstra A, Vonk-Noordegraaf A
Background: Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a well-known complication of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It remains unclear whether exercise parameters can be used to discriminate between COPD patients with associated PH (COPD-PH) and COPD patients without associated PH (COPD-nonPH). Objective: To study whether the existence of pulmonary hypertension in COPD is related to characteristic findings in gas exchange and circulatory parameters during cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET... Pflugers Archiv : European journal of physiology, Volume 455, Issue 5, 2 1 2007, Pages 951-959 A refined radio-telemetry technique to monitor right ventricle or pulmonary artery pressures in rats: a useful tool in pulmonary hypertension research. Handoko ML, Schalij I, Kramer K, Sebkhi A, Postmus PE, van der Laarse WJ, Paulus WJ, Vonk-Noordegraaf A
Implantable radio-telemetry methodology, allowing for continuous recording of pulmonary haemodynamics, has previously been used to assess effects of therapy on development and treatment of pulmonary hypertension. In the original procedure, rats were subjected to invasive thoracic surgery, which imposes significant stress that may disturb critical aspects of the cardiovascular system and delay recovery. In the present study, we describe and compare the original trans-thoracic approach with a new,... Abstract

The Journal of investigative dermatology, Volume 128, Issue 1, 5 1 2007, Pages 45-49 Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome: clinical and genetic studies of 20 families. Leter EM, Koopmans AK, Gille JJ, van Os TA, Vittoz GG, David EF, Jaspars EH, Postmus PE, van Moorselaar RJ, Craanen ME, Starink TM, Menko FH
Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is an autosomal-dominant genodermatosis characterized by skin fibrofolliculomas and an increased risk of spontaneous pneumothorax, renal and possibly other tumors. A causative gene (FLCN) on chromosome 17p has recently been identified. We here report clinical and genetic studies of 20 BHD families ascertained by the presence of multiple fibrofolliculomas or trichodiscomas in the proband. Pathogenic FLCN germline mutations were found in 11 (69%) of 16 probands tested... Abstract

The treatment of Pancoast tumours has been a combined-modality effort for several decades. In a recent Dutch publication, the results in 36 patients are described with a mean follow-up of 26 months. These are in line with internationally-achieved outcomes: the overall and disease-free survival after 2 years was 45 and 31%, respectively, and after 5 years 28 and 19%. As such, the approach to superior-sulcus tumours is a very good example of how the modern treatment of lung cancer has developed, a... Abstract

Lung cancer (Amsterdam, Netherlands), Volume 58, Issue 1, 29 5 2007, Pages 44-49 Dual digital video-autofluorescence imaging for detection of pre-neoplastic lesions. Lee P, Brokx HA, Postmus PE, Sutedja TG
Aim: The incorporation of autofluorescence (AF) to white light bronchoscopy has led to improved sensitivity for the detection of pre-neoplastic lesions in the airways. However, AF has difficulty distinguishing benign epithelial changes such as bronchitis, previous biopsy, and airway fibrosis from pre-invasive lesions, which necessitates extensive biopsy. This frequently results in longer procedural time and need for additional sedation that may compromise patient safety, increase the risk of bro... Abstract

The International journal of biological markers, Volume 22, Issue 2, 1 1 2007, Pages 114-123 Basic helix-loop-helix transcription factor profiling of lung tumors shows aberrant expression of the proneural gene atonal homolog 1 (ATOH1, HATH1, MATH1) in neuroendocrine tumors. Westerman BA, Breuer RH, Poutsma A, Chhatta A, Noorduyn LA, Koolen MG, Postmus PE, Blankenstein MA, Oudejans CB
Microarray-based expression profiling studies of lung adenocarcinomas have defined neuroendocrine subclasses with poor prognosis. As neuroendocrine development is regulated by members of the achaete-scute and atonal classes of basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factors, we analyzed lung tumors for expression of these factors. Out of 13 bHLH genes tested, 4 genes, i.e., achaete-scute complex-like 1 (ASCL1, HASH1, Mash1), atonal homolog 1 (ATOH1, HATH1, MATH1), NEUROD4 (ATH-3, Atoh3, MATH... Abstract
