Faquih TO, Aziz NA, Gardiner SL, Li-Gao R, de Mutsert R, Milaneschi Y, Trompet S, Jukema JW, Rosendaal FR, van Hylckama Vlieg A, van Dijk KW, Mook-Kanamori DO
Tandem cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeat sizes of 36 or more in the huntingtin gene (HTT) cause Huntington's disease (HD). Apart from neuropsychiatric complications, the disease is also accompanied by metabolic dysregulation and weight loss, which contribute to a progressive functional decline. Recent studies also reported an association between repeats below the pathogenic threshold ( Abstract

Frontiers in pharmacology, Volume 14, 27 4 2023, Pages 1098184 Heparanase-2 protein and peptides have a protective effect on experimental glomerulonephritis and diabetic nephropathy. Buijsers B, Garsen M, de Graaf M, Bakker-van Bebber M, Guo C, Li X, van der Vlag J
Introduction: The endothelial glycocalyx degrading enzyme heparanase-1 (HPSE1) is a major contributor to kidney diseases, such as glomerulonephritis and diabetic nephropathy. Therefore, inhibition of HPSE1 could be an interesting therapeutic strategy to treat glomerular diseases. A possible HPSE1 inhibitor is heparanase-2 (HPSE2) because HPSE2 is a structural homolog of HPSE1 without enzymatic activity. The importance of HPSE2 has been recently demonstrated in HPSE2-deficient mice, since these m... Abstract

Better biomarkers for programmed death - (ligand) 1 (PD-(L)1) checkpoint blockade in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are needed. We explored the predictive value of early response evaluation using Fluor-18-deoxyglucose positron emission tomography and pre- and on-treatment flowcytometric T-cell profiling in peripheral blood and tumor-draining lymph nodes (TDLN). The on-treatment evaluation was performed 7-14 days after the start of PD-1 blockade in NSCLC patients. These data were related to (... Abstract
International journal of molecular sciences, Volume 24, Issue 9, 25 4 2023, Pages 7818 Atorvastatin Attenuates Diet-Induced Non-Alcoholic Steatohepatitis in APOE*3-Leiden Mice by Reducing Hepatic Inflammation. Inia JA, Stokman G, Pieterman EJ, Morrison MC, Menke AL, Verschuren L, Caspers MPM, Giera M, Jukema JW, van den Hoek AM, Princen HMG
Patients with metabolic syndrome are often prescribed statins to prevent the development of cardiovascular disease. Conversely, data on their effects on non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) are lacking. We evaluated these effects by feeding APOE*3-Leiden mice a Western-type diet (WTD) with or without atorvastatin to induce NASH and hepatic fibrosis. Besides the well-known plasma cholesterol lowering (-30%) and anti-atherogenic effects (severe lesion size -48%), atorvastatin significantly reduced... Abstract
