While tuberculosis (TB) represents a significant disease burden worldwide, low-incidence countries strive to reach the WHO target of pre-elimination by 2035. Screening for TB in immigrants is an important component of the strategy to reduce the TB burden in low-incidence settings. An important option is the screening and preventive treatment of latent TB infection (LTBI). Whether this policy is worthwhile depends on the extent of transmission within the country, and introduction of new cases thr... Abstract

Overdevest I, Haverkate M, Veenemans J, Hendriks Y, Verhulst C, Mulders A, Couprie W, Bootsma M, Johnson J, Kluytmans J
The extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli clone ST131 (ESBL-ST131) has spread in healthcare settings worldwide. The reasons for its successful spread are unknown, but might include more effective transmission and/or longer persistence. We evaluated the colonisation dynamics of ESBL-producing E. coli (ESBL-EC), including ESBL-ST131, in a long-term care facility (LTCF) with an unusually high prevalence of rectal ESBL-EC colonisation. During a 14-month period, rectal or... Abstract

Boden H, Ahmed TA, Velders MA, van der Hoeven BL, Hoogslag GE, Bootsma M, le Cessie S, Cobbaert CM, Delgado V, van der Laarse A, Schalij MJ
The clinical use of advanced imaging modalities for early determination of infarct size and prognosis is limited. As a specific indicator of myocardial necrosis, cardiac troponin T (cTnT) can be used as a surrogate measure for this purpose. The present study sought to investigate the use of peak and serial 6-hour fixed-time high-sensitive (hs) cTnT for estimation of infarct size, left ventricular (LV) function, and prognosis in consecutive patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction... Journal of electrocardiology, Volume 44, Issue 4, 1 1 2011, Pages 453-459 Predictive power of T-wave alternans and of ventricular gradient hysteresis for the occurrence of ventricular arrhythmias in primary prevention cardioverter-defibrillator patients. Man S, De Winter PV, Maan AC, Thijssen J, Borleffs CJ, van Meerwijk WP, Bootsma M, van Erven L, van der Wall EE, Schalij MJ, Burattini L, Burattini R, Swenne CA
Background and purpose: Left ventricular ejection fraction lacks specificity to predict sudden cardiac death in heart failure. T-wave alternans (TWA; beat-to-beat T-wave instability, often measured during exercise) is deemed a promising noninvasive predictor of major cardiac arrhythmic event. Recently, it was demonstrated that TWA during recovery from exercise has additional predictive value. Another mechanism that potentially contributes to arrhythmogeneity is exercise-recovery hysteresis in ac... Abstract
