Masaya Watanabe, MD, PhD

Postdoc: 2013-15

Masaya Watanabe is specialized in clinical and basic cardiac electrophysiology. He obtained his Medical degree in his origin country of Japan in 2002. He went on to become a certified cardiologist and started postgraduate training at the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine in Hokkaido University Graduate School, Japan in 2007. He received his PhD in Physiology of Medical Science in 2012. There, he specialized in optical mapping and immunohistological techniques applied to the diabetic rat's atrium. He has also been engaged in the diagnosis and invasive treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.

He joined the Laboratory of Experimental Cardiology in Autumn 2013. Using personal funding he will study the underlying mechanisms of ventricular arrhythmias using human myocardial biopsies. Next to his bench activities, he will also assist during catheter ablation procedures in patients suffering from such rhythm disorders.
