Dr. N. Grewal

Dr. N. (Nimrat) Grewal is cardio-thoracaal chirurg. Na het afronden van haar studie geneeskunde in augustus 2013 is zij begonnen met werken op de afdeling Thoraxchirurgie in het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum.

Naast het klinisch werk, startte zij ook met haar promotieonderzoek op de afdeling Thoraxchirurgie en de afdeling Anatomie en Embryologie. Zij deed daarbij zowel laboratorium als klinisch onderzoek naar aorta vaatwand pathologie bij patiënten met een bicuspide aortaklep en het syndroom van Marfan. Patiënten met een bicuspide aortaklep hebben een verhoogd risico op het ontwikkelen van een verwijding van de aorta. Tijdens haar promotieonderzoek ontwikkelde Nimrat weefselmarkers om patiënten met een verhoogd risico op complicaties van de aorta vroegtijdig te kunnen detecteren. Het onderzoek resulteerde in het proefschrift getiteld “Aortopathy in patients with a Bicuspid Aortic Valve: determining susceptibility for aortic complications”, waarmee zij in februari 2015 promoveerde.

Na het afronden van haar promotieonderzoek is ze begonnen met haar postdoc project waarbij ze haar ‘bench to bedside’ onderzoek continueert naar aorta pathologie.
