Dr. J. Hjortnaes

Dr. J. (Jesper) Hjortnaes is cardiothoracaal chirurg en heeft als aandachtsgebied de aortachirurgie en implantatie van Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVAD of steunhart).

In 2015  promoveerde hij op het onderwerp "Calcific Aortic Valve Disase – Shedding light on its onset", een basaal wetenschappelijk proefschrift dat nieuwe weefselmodellen van hartkleppen gebruikt om verkalking te bestuderen. Dit onderzoek werd uitgevoerd aan Harvard University, Boston, Verenigde Staten. In juni 2020 rondde hij de opleiding tot cardiothoracaal chirurg af. Deze opleiding volgde hij in het Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht en de Isala Klinieken Zwolle. Sinds september 2020 is hij als cardiothoracaal chirurg werkzaam in het Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum.

Naast zijn dagelijkse activiteiten als cardiothoracaal chirurg is Dr. Hjortnaes intensief betrokken bij wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Met onder andere steun van de Nederlandse Hartstichting doet hij basaal wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar regeneratie van de (falende) hartspier, door samen met de Technische Universiteit Eindhoven nieuwe humane weefsel modellen te ontwikkelen van de hartspier. Deze modellen kunnen gebruikt worden om tailormade behandelingen te ontwikkelen voor patiënten met hartfalen. Bovendien, is Dr. Hjortnaes actief betrokken bij onderzoek naar aorta-chirurgie, waarin zijn aandacht gaat naar het ontwikkelen van nieuwe  methoden om chirurgische behandelingen te vergelijken. Hij begeleidt meerdere onderzoekers met hun promotieonderzoek.
